We perceive elephants as gentle and caring giants within the animal kingdom. Through zoos, circuses, and other popular events, these magnificent creatures are frequently exploited for human entertainment. Thong Bai was one such mistreated animal. Thong Bai, the giant bull elephant, is the symbol of Surin province, Thailand, the land of the elephant, where elephants are held in high esteem. Thong Bai is a legendary Thai bull elephant whose fame has been leveraged to entertain tourists for over 40 years. Lek Chailert, the founder of The Elephant Sanctuary, is a fervent advocate for rescuing and saving elephants. He keeps the public informed about elephants like Thong Bai via his Facebook page, consistently updating everyone on his story. “After more than forty years of service to people, he deserves his freedom,” Lek posted. Finally, after many years, Thong Bai has been freed. Previously privately owned and used for countless advertisements, Thong Bai has appeared in beer commercials, films, and at numerous weddings. The elephant is now being cared for in Surin province. A year before the animal’s release, Lek brought Khun NuNa Silpa-archa to the province to visit Thong Bai and other elephants. Witnessing Thong Bai’s past life and the majesty of his presence, she was moved to assist elephants in need. It was she who worked tirelessly to secure the beautiful elephant’s freedom. Khun NuNa Silpa-archa diligently worked to unchain the elephants she encountered, achieving success a year later.

An agreement was reached between the elephant’s owner and the activists fighting for his freedom, whereby the owner would permit the elephant to roam freely within an enclosure. His new habitat is part of the Surin Project, an initiative dedicated to improving living conditions for working elephants and the economic well-being of their mahouts. The community contributed to building Thong Bai a shelter and preparing him for release into the area. The Surin government managed the land, and the Thai Beverage company provided funding for the construction. Now, the elephant has a secure home where he can roam safely and comfortably. He is no longer subjected to chains or forced labor. His enclosure boasts ample mud and shade, a fountain, and extensive open space. “The day everyone longed for has finally arrived. After over four decades of shackles, freedom has finally been granted,” writes Lek. “Thong Bai, the Legend of Surin, is free from his chains. We welcomed him to his new home today. He seemed uncertain and nervous about his new freedom, even shy to explore without direction.” At Newsner, we have consistently highlighted the harsh reality faced by elephants compelled to spend their lives entertaining humans. No animal should endure confinement and torture for our amusement. Please share this to disseminate this crucial message and encourage greater involvement in this issue.
