The Morning After: A Sudden Case of Impetigo
I recently met a woman at the supermarket, and we hit it off immediately. Everything felt normal, and we started seeing each other. After our second date, we spent the evening talking for hours, and I went to bed feeling genuinely happy. However, the next morning, I woke up to a nightmare.

I immediately felt an unusual sensation on my forehead. At first, I assumed it was just simple skin irritation or perhaps an allergic reaction to something I had eaten or used the night before. But when I stood in front of the mirror to take a closer look, I froze. My forehead was covered in angry red sores, crusty patches, and strange yellowish lesions. Some areas looked severely burned, while others were wet and inflamed.
I had never seen anything like this in my life. I spent nearly half an hour staring at the reflection, spiraling into a panic. My imagination ran wild—was it some sort of severe infection? A highly contagious virus? I frantically tried to recall every detail of the previous evening, searching for a cause for what was happening to my skin. As the morning progressed, the condition worsened; the crusts darkened, and the skin began to feel incredibly tight and painful.
After doing some urgent research and consulting with a medical professional, I finally received an answer: the diagnosis was impetigo.
Impetigo is a highly contagious bacterial skin infection. It typically manifests as red sores that rupture and develop into those characteristic yellowish-brown crusts. It causes significant inflammation and irritation, and because it is highly contagious, it often spreads through direct skin-to-skin contact. While it is more common than many realize, actually experiencing the sudden, overnight onset was a truly terrifying experience.
Thankfully, the condition is treatable with the right medical care. Once I started on a regimen of proper medication and antibiotics, the sores began to heal. It serves as a stark reminder of how quickly a common infection can take hold—and why you should always consult a doctor immediately when you notice something unusual on your body.
