The warrant, details of which are yet to be fully disclosed to the public, reportedly pertains to allegations stemming from his term in office.
BI officials confirmed the apprehension, stating that standard procedure was being followed, which included a medical assessment by their on-site medical personnel upon arrival. They emphasized that while Mr. Duterte’s health was being monitored, the immediate priority was processing him according to legal protocols associated with the warrant. This procedural approach seemed to be the point of contention, as Kitty Duterte’s public statements suggested a desire for immediate and unfettered access to hospital care, bypassing the initial stages of detention and processing.
Hours after the initial apprehension and Kitty Duterte’s social media outcry, negotiations between Duterte’s legal team and BI representatives commenced. Public pressure mounted, fueled by online discussions and media inquiries following Kitty Duterte’s posts. Eventually, a compromise was reached. A team of independent doctors, selected by the Duterte family but vetted and approved by the BI, was permitted to conduct a thorough medical examination of the former president at the detention facility within NAIA Terminal 3.
After a comprehensive evaluation and consultation with BI medical staff, it was determined that while immediate hospitalization was not deemed critical at that precise moment, close medical monitoring and specific treatments were indeed necessary due to his reported weakening condition. Acknowledging the family’s concerns and the medical team’s recommendations, the BI agreed to transfer Mr. Duterte to a secure medical facility within Metro Manila. This facility, while not a general public hospital, was equipped to provide the required level of medical care under secure conditions, ensuring both his well-being and the continuation of the legal processes related to the outstanding warrant.
A spokesperson for the Bureau of Immigration released a statement later that evening, clarifying the situation. The statement affirmed that the apprehension was conducted lawfully based on a valid warrant and that procedures were in place to ensure all detainees received appropriate medical attention. It further stated that the BI was committed to safeguarding Mr. Duterte’s health while upholding the rule of law, and that allegations of intentionally denying him necessary healthcare were unfounded and regrettable misunderstandings of standard operating procedures in such circumstances. The statement concluded by confirming the transfer to a secure medical facility and assuring the public that Mr. Duterte’s health and legal rights were being respected.
