A Birthday Visit and Unexpected Gifts

DAUGHTERS VISIT FATHER’S GRAVE IN THEIR NEW ATTIRE AND FIND TWO BOXES BEARING THEIR NAMES
“For my birthday, I desire my little girls to look as lovely as can be,” Brian expressed, his voice low and imbued with hope. “I’m so eager to see your chosen outfits. Do you promise to visit Daddy and present your lovely dresses, girls? Though Daddy may not be there with you on that day, you must promise me you’ll look your finest.” Those words represented his parting wish… a tender request for his daughters to come to him on his birthday.
When Brian’s birthday arrived, the girls donned their new attire, each piece thoughtfully selected to fulfill his wish. Hand in hand, their tiny steps measured and deliberate, they proceeded towards his grave, their mother, Linda, trailing just behind.
As they stood before Brian’s gravestone, the girls observed two exquisitely wrapped boxes, each bearing their names and adorned with a small sticker.👇With wide, curious eyes, Lily, the elder sister at seven, pointed a finger, her new pink dress rustling softly in the breeze. “Mommy, boxes!” Four-year-old Rose, in a matching blue dress, echoed her sister, “Boxes! For us?”
Linda’s heart clenched. She hadn’t noticed them initially, her gaze fixed on the cold, grey stone that marked her husband’s resting place. Stepping closer, she saw the neat calligraphy of Brian’s hand, unmistakable even now, adorning each box: “For Lily” and “For Rose.” A small, brightly colored sticker of a butterfly was affixed to each, a detail that brought a fresh wave of tears to Linda’s eyes. Brian always knew how much the girls loved butterflies.
Kneeling before the boxes, Linda gently picked them up. They were light, surprisingly so. “Yes, sweethearts,” she murmured, her voice thick with emotion. “It seems Daddy has a birthday surprise for you after all.”
With trembling fingers, Linda carefully peeled back the delicate wrapping paper on Lily’s box. Inside, nestled on a bed of soft tissue paper, lay a small, wooden music box, intricately carved with roses and lilies. Next to it, a folded piece of paper. Rose’s box held an identical music box, also with a letter.
Linda unfolded Lily’s letter and began to read aloud, her voice catching slightly. “My dearest Lily-pad,” it started, Brian’s playful nickname for her. “If you are reading this, then my birthday has arrived, and you are as beautiful as an angel in your new dress, just as I knew you would be. I am so sorry I cannot be there to see you, but know that I am watching over you always, as your guardian star. This little music box plays a lullaby I used to sing to you. Whenever you feel sad or miss me, play it, and remember how much Daddy loves you. Be brave, be kind, and always look after your little sister. With all my love, forever and always, Daddy.”
Tears streamed down Linda’s face as she finished reading. Lily, understanding the weight of her father’s words, reached out and touched the music box, her lower lip trembling. Linda opened Rose’s letter, which mirrored Lily’s, substituting “Rosebud” for “Lily-pad” and mentioning the lullaby he sang to her.
As Linda finished reading Rose’s letter, Lily carefully wound the key of her music box. A delicate, sweet melody filled the quiet air of the cemetery, the lullaby Brian used to hum as he rocked them to sleep. Rose, mimicking her sister, wound hers too, and soon two music boxes played in soft harmony, their gentle tunes weaving through the solemn stillness.
The girls, clutching their music boxes, looked up at their mother with tear-filled eyes, but also with a nascent understanding of their father’s enduring love. Linda wrapped her arms around them both, holding them close as the music drifted on the breeze.
Brian’s wish had been fulfilled in a way none of them could have imagined. He might not be physically present, but his love, carefully wrapped in boxes and melodies, resonated deeply in their hearts. As the last notes of the lullaby faded, a butterfly, the same kind as on the stickers, fluttered down and landed gently on Lily’s pink dress, before taking flight again, soaring upwards towards the bright blue sky. In that moment, standing by his grave, surrounded by the love he had so thoughtfully prepared, Linda and her daughters felt Brian’s presence as clearly as if he were standing right beside them, his love a comforting embrace that would last a lifetime.
