A Birthday Wish, Two Surprises

GIRLS VISIT DAD’S GRAVE TO SHOW OFF THEIR NEW DRESSES AND FIND TWO BOXES WITH THEIR NAMES ON THEM
“For my special day, I wish to see my daughters looking their absolute best,” Brian expressed, his tone gentle yet full of hope. “I am truly eager to see your attire. Will you vow to visit your Daddy and present your gorgeous dresses, my dears? Even though Daddy may not be present physically on that day, you must promise me you will be at your finest.” These pronouncements marked his dying wish… a humble plea for his daughters to come see him on his birthday.
As Brian’s birthday arrived, the girls donned their fresh attire, each piece thoughtfully selected to fulfill his wish. Hand in hand they went, their small steps measured and deliberate as they made their way to his grave, their mother, Linda, walking closely behind them.
Arriving at Brian’s gravestone, the girls spotted two exquisitely wrapped boxes bearing their names, each adorned with a small sticker.Their eyes widened in unison, mirroring the surprise etched on Linda’s face. Sarah, the elder, cautiously approached the boxes first, her fingers tracing the letters of her name. “Mommy, look!” she whispered, pointing to the sticker on her box. It was a small, heart-shaped sticker with a tiny, hand-drawn daisy on it, Brian’s favorite flower. Emily, a step behind, mirrored her sister, her own box adorned with a similar sticker, this one bearing a little bluebird, Brian’s nickname for her.

Linda knelt beside them, her voice soft, “Open them, my loves. Daddy must have wanted you to have these.”

With trembling fingers, Sarah carefully peeled back the wrapping paper on her box. Inside, nestled on a bed of soft tissue paper, lay a delicate silver locket. It was heart-shaped, just like the sticker, and engraved with a tiny daisy. Emily, mirroring her sister’s actions, unwrapped her own box to reveal a similar locket, this one also silver and heart-shaped, but engraved with a tiny bluebird.

Linda gently unclasped the lockets. “Look inside,” she murmured, her voice thick with emotion. Sarah opened hers and gasped. Inside, was a miniature photograph of her and her Daddy, taken last summer at the park, his arm wrapped around her shoulders, both of them beaming at the camera. Emily opened hers and found an equally precious picture, a snapshot from her fifth birthday party, Brian helping her cut her cake, his face alight with fatherly pride.

Tears welled in both girls’ eyes, mirroring the tears already streaming down Linda’s face. They understood. Daddy, even though he was gone, had still remembered them, had still found a way to be with them on his special day.

“He… he remembered,” Sarah choked out, clutching the locket to her chest.

“He always will, my darling,” Linda whispered, pulling both girls into a tight embrace. “He loved you both more than words can say.”

They spent a few moments in silent embrace, the gentle breeze rustling the leaves of the nearby trees, as if nature itself was offering a comforting sigh. Then, Linda helped each girl fasten their locket around their necks. The silver chains glinted in the sunlight, resting against the vibrant fabric of their new dresses.

Sarah and Emily stepped forward, their small faces turned towards Brian’s gravestone. “Daddy,” Sarah began, her voice a little stronger now, “We came. We wore our pretty dresses, just like you wanted.”

Emily nodded, her hand reaching up to touch the bluebird locket. “Happy birthday, Daddy,” she whispered, her voice filled with a love that transcended the boundaries of life and death.

Linda knelt behind them, placing a hand on each of their shoulders. “He sees you, my angels,” she said softly, her voice filled with a quiet certainty. “He sees you looking beautiful, and he is so proud.”

As they stood there, bathed in the warm afternoon sun, a sense of peace settled over them. The grief was still there, a dull ache in their hearts, but it was mingled with a profound sense of love and connection. Brian’s wish had been fulfilled, not just in the dresses they wore, but in the enduring love that bound them together, a love that even death could not diminish. They knew, deep in their young hearts, that a part of their Daddy would always be with them, especially on days like this, close to their hearts, just like the lockets they now wore.
