Cause of death disclosed for country music legend Dolly Parton
Country music legend Dolly Parton has died at 80, and her representatives have now verified the cause of her death.
Her nephew, Bryan Seaver, confirmed the heartbreaking news of Parton’s passing on Tuesday through a social-media video.
Opening the announcement, he identified himself as Brin Seaver, the son of Cassie Parton. Speaking on behalf of the Parton and Owens families, he announced the death of his aunt, Dolly Rebecca Parton Dean—a woman known as Sister, Sis and Granny to one generation, and Gigi to the generation that followed.
Seaver explained that Dolly had asked him years earlier to deliver this video message, long before he could fully understand that it would one day become reality. He had served as her security chief for more than two decades, following his father Larry in that role. Although he had often imagined how heavy this day would feel, he said its true weight had only now reached him.
He described the responsibility as an honor filled with tremendous pride as well as profound sorrow. Yet, he added, the grief belonged to those left behind rather than to Dolly. In his words, she had lived in the light and was now with Jesus, surely welcomed by Carl, her parents and many others who had watched over her and waited to meet her in heaven.
She had said she was “dealing with some health issues”
Just days before her death, Parton discussed her worsening health during an interview with PEOPLE. She said that, as she had mentioned in video updates over the previous year, she was facing health problems she had neglected while caring for her husband, Carl.
Dolly also noted that this was not her first serious health struggle. Back in the early ’80s, she had been confined for several months by female health problems while also having difficulty with her weight. For that reason, she explained, she was no stranger to hard periods involving her health.
Her team has now told PEOPLE that Parton died following a “brief battle with cancer.” They did not identify the specific form of cancer with which she had been diagnosed.
Dolly Parton’s extraordinary career
Parton first found widespread fame beside Porter Wagoner in 1967, then grew into one of country music’s most celebrated figures. Across her remarkable career, she released thousands of songs, among them enduring favorites such as “Jolene” and “9 to 5.”
She placed 25 singles at No. 1 on Billboard’s country rankings and received numerous Grammy Awards in recognition of her music. Parton also worked as an actor and became inseparably linked with Dollywood, the Tennessee theme park she helped create.
Her impact reached well beyond entertainment. She launched multiple charitable programs and earned admiration for her philanthropy, especially her contributions to education and healthcare.
Parton and Carl Dean were married from 1966 until his death in 2025.
Today, friends, relatives and fans are grieving Dolly Parton while remembering how her music, professional achievements and generosity influenced people across generations. Her death closes an exceptional life, but her legacy will endure in the songs she composed and performed, the causes she supported and the countless people touched by her remarkable journey.
