Three Recovered and One Missing Following British Columbia Mudslide

The bodies of three men have been recovered from the site of a mudslide near Lillooet, British Columbia, as search operations in the region recently concluded. According to B.C. Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe, one of the men was recovered on Wednesday, followed by two additional victims on Thursday. Despite ongoing efforts throughout Friday, a fourth individual reported missing in the same incident remains unaccounted for.

These recoveries follow the discovery of a woman’s body at the site earlier in the week, marking the first confirmed fatality from the severe flooding and landslides that have devastated the southern region of the province due to extreme rainfall. With all immediate search avenues exhausted, authorities have now stepped down, though discussions regarding potential future actions are ongoing.

Law enforcement officials are currently working to formally identify the three men and ensure that their next of kin have been notified. The incident occurred on a portion of Highway 99, also known as Duffey Lake Road, where a massive mudslide trapped several individuals. RCMP Staff Sgt. Janelle Shoihet noted that the search for the missing fourth person was severely complicated by poor weather and the precarious conditions of the debris field.

In a formal statement, Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe offered her deepest condolences to the families mourning the sudden loss of their loved ones, as well as to the family of the person who remains missing. She acknowledged that this has been an incredibly difficult year for British Columbia and emphasized that the BC Coroners Service remains committed to establishing the full facts behind these tragedies to prevent similar fatalities in the future.
