The Mysterious Seeds Under My Mattress

I discovered this beneath my mattress, and at first, I assumed they were insect eggs, but the truth truly surprised me.

That day, I decided to flip the mattress over simply to air it out and change the sheets. Everything was proceeding as usual until I noticed a strange cluster of small black grains tucked away in the corner of the bed. They were matte in texture with a slight sheen, appearing much like miniature pieces of coal.

My heart sank immediately. My first fearful thought was that they were insect eggs—perhaps from cockroaches or some type of beetle. A chill ran down my spine at the prospect of an infestation. I carefully collected a few of the grains on a piece of paper to examine them more closely. Upon inspection, they were far too hard and dry to be anything biological or living. Still, the mystery remained: how did they get under my mattress?

Driven by curiosity and a lingering sense of unease, I took a picture and sent it to a friend who is well-versed in herbal remedies and traditional folk customs. She messaged me back almost instantly, identifying them as kalonji, or black cumin seeds. She suggested that someone must have placed them there intentionally.

I was stunned. I searched for the significance of the seeds online and discovered that for centuries, kalonji has been used in various traditions as a charm to ward off sickness and negative energy. It is often hidden under mattresses, near thresholds, or even sewn into pillows to promote peace and protection.

For a moment, I felt unsettled, wondering who would place such things without my knowledge. Then, I remembered that my grandmother had visited a few weeks prior. She has always been the type of person who adheres to quiet blessings and deep-rooted traditions.

That evening, I called her to ask if she had put anything under my mattress. She chuckled softly and confirmed it. She told me it was kalonji, intended to keep me safe. She noticed that I had been restless lately and believed that a bit of traditional protection might help bring me peace.
