The Commander’s Trial
The gym was a place of familiar, aggressive noise where the rhythmic clanging of metal and the heavy thud of barbells hitting the floor defined the atmosphere. It was a space saturated with sweat, dust, and the intensity of soldiers fueled by the constant need to prove their physical dominance. The air was thick with competitive pride until the main doors swung open and the commander stepped inside to address his unit.
Soldiers, give me your attention, the commander announced, his voice echoing through the silent hall. I want to introduce your new commander. From now on, all questions go to her. She will train you and be responsible for your preparation.
The initial silence was shattered by a snort of derision, followed quickly by a wave of laughter that rippled through the room. Standing before them was a woman of moderate build with her hair pulled into a tight, practical bun and a gaze that remained cold and entirely unshaken. Despite her professional demeanor, the soldiers had already made their judgment. Whispers of disbelief and mockery filled the air as they dismissed her, labeling her weak before she had even been given a chance to speak.
The former commander offered the woman a brief nod before turning to leave, telling her to get to know her new unit. The moment he disappeared, any veneer of discipline collapsed. The soldiers returned to their personal routines, ignoring the woman entirely as if she were invisible. She stood in the center of the gym, watching the room, her eyes hardening as she realized they had no intention of accepting her authority.
Seeking a moment to compose herself, she unscrewed a water bottle and took a sip. That was when the most arrogant soldier in the room, a massive, muscular man, approached her from behind with a smug grin. He snatched the bottle from her hand and doused her with the contents, soaking her uniform and hair. The gym fell silent for a heartbeat before erupting into cheers and taunts.
Come on, show us what you can do, he sneered, clearly enjoying the public humiliation he had inflicted.
The woman didn’t lose her composure. She simply wiped the water from her face and looked at him with an intensity that caused his grin to falter. You are going to regret that, she said with quiet, chilling authority.
When the soldier scoffed and shoved her shoulder, the room witnessed a transformation that defied their expectations. In a motion so fluid and rapid it seemed like a blur, she stepped aside, caught his arm, and swept his legs out from underneath him. The giant crashed to the mat face-first, unable to process how quickly the dynamic had shifted. Before he could recover, she pinned his arm behind his back and drove her knee into his shoulder, applying a level of pressure to his wrist that brought him to the brink of agony.
The laughter died instantly. The rest of the unit froze in shock, watching as the man they considered their strongest teammate struggled against her superior technique. Let me go, you are hurting me, he gasped, but she tightened her grip. The pain was unbearable, and his arrogance evaporated, replaced by genuine desperation.
Apologize, she commanded firmly.
I am sorry, he shouted, his face twisted in pain. I am sorry, do you hear me, I am sorry.
Satisfied, she released him and rose to her feet with calm dignity. The soldier remained on the mat, nursing his arm and trembling from the shock of his defeat. Adjusting her damp clothing, she addressed the silent, stunned room. Strength is not found in muscles, nor by humiliating those you deem to be lower than you, she said, her voice steady and echoing against the walls. When you were still children, I was already serving this country. I have seen countless fools who believed that a bicep decided everything. We are here for the same mission, and you are meant to be a team, not a mob laughing at rank.
She surveyed the men, her eyes meeting theirs one by one. I have shown you what I am capable of, she concluded. Now, either you start working as soldiers should, or every single one of you will have to find out what happens when you decide to ignore my orders. From that moment on, not a single person in the room dared to challenge her again.
