Dog’s shocking diagnosis saves him from euthanasia
When a 4-month-old puppy was surrendered to the Cuyahoga Country Animal Shelter in Ohio, USA, in April 2016, he was so ill that he couldn’t even open his mouth to eat. Despite his condition, he remained in high spirits; his tail wagged continuously, and he was eager to give everyone kisses. Veterinarians examined him and suspected he had contracted a severe infection from a dog bite. The infection had caused a facial deformity, so they administered antibiotics hoping to restore his health. Sadly, these treatments were ineffective. The dog, named Squish, grew weaker and weaker due to his inability to eat properly. The situation became so critical that a date was set for his euthanasia, as the vets believed it would be kinder than letting him suffer. Squish’s future looked grim. However, those caring for him were unwilling to give up on a puppy who possessed so much love and affection. ### X-rays Reveal a Shocking Discovery. Before his scheduled euthanasia, they decided to send him to a specialist for X-rays. It was during these scans that something unexpected was uncovered. Initially, it was assumed that the dog’s facial deformities were a result of an infection from a dog bite, but this was not the case. It was discovered that he had sustained significant fractures to his skull and upper right jaw. Scar tissue had prevented his jaw from growing in sync with the rest of his body, making it extremely difficult for him to open his mouth. The only viable solution for Squish was extensive surgery. Unfortunately, no one was willing to fund the procedure, nor was anyone prepared to adopt him in his severely ill state. ### Squish Goes Home. As Squish’s fate grew increasingly bleak, veterinarian Danielle Boyd, having just finished her internship at the Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter, decided to take the dog home for the night.
She felt it would be a comfort for Squish to spend one night not alone in a cage. Upon arriving home, Squish transformed into a completely different dog. Danielle marveled at how a creature who had endured such pain in his short life could still trust people, yet he did. Squish fell asleep in Danielle’s arms, and by the morning, she knew she couldn’t let him be euthanized. Furthermore, it wasn’t just Danielle who was captivated by Squish’s charm. Eileen Heldmann, the vet who had initially assessed him, also wanted to save him. She performed surgery the following day. ### A Successful Operation. The surgery was a complete success, allowing Squish to eat again. Although a tooth, an eye, and part of his jaw were removed, the outcome was a happy dog. “I cried seeing his excitement as he picked up a tennis ball for the first time, and that was only the beginning of his little victories,” Danielle told The Dodo. ### Fate Brought Them Together. He now loves to play, fetch balls, and cuddle with Danielle. It later emerged that Danielle had lost her own dog just two days before meeting Squish. One might say fate orchestrated their meeting; they needed each other. I am so happy that Squish’s story has a happy ending. Every good soul deserves a second chance, and it is heartwarming to know that Squish is now in a safe and loving home.
