Loyal dog searched for family in storm

As Southern California prepared for a historic hurricane last week, a solitary white dog roamed the streets of a Los Angeles neighborhood, confused, covered in ticks, and searching every yard for the family that had abandoned him. Residents observed him pacing in front of their houses, peering under gates and gazing through fences, as if asking, “Is this my home?” Many offered him food, but no one felt capable of taking him in. “He was just waiting,” said Suzette Hall, founder of Logan’s Legacy dog rescue. “He wouldn’t leave the street. He was so loyal; he truly believed his family was coming back.” But time was running out. With the storm approaching, Hall got into her van and hurried to the scene. When she arrived, the dog raised his head at the sound of her car, a glimmer of hope in his eyes. For a moment, he appeared to think his family had returned. Instead, he encountered someone else: a rescuer.

Hall could sense his hesitation. “It was as if he knew I was there to help, but he was afraid to let go, as though leaving that street meant giving up on the people he loved.” So she sat with him. Spoke to him. Told him the truth. “We had a long talk,” Hall recounted. “I told him they weren’t coming back, but that I was here, and I wasn’t leaving without him.” Eventually, the dog, now named Scooby, allowed Hall to put a leash around his neck. He climbed into her van and, finally secure, did something he hadn’t done in days: he slept. “He curled up and instantly passed out,” Hall said.

“He’s just the sweetest boy. A total cuddlebug.” Scooby was rushed to Camino Pet Hospital, where a team of caregivers treated his tick infestation and other health issues. Gradually, his sorrow began to fade. Now, Scooby wags his tail with happiness. He rolls over for belly rubs. He is still at the hospital, recovering, waiting – but this time, he is waiting for a genuine forever home. “We are desperate to find the family he deserves,” Hall said. “Someone who will never abandon him again.”
