I Saw My Best Friend Kissing My Crush Last Night

I CAUGHT MY BEST FRIEND KISSING JAKE IN HIS CAR LAST NIGHT

The glow of the streetlight flickered as I leaned closer, squinting through the fogged-up window of Jake’s sedan. My heart dropped when I saw her hand on his cheek, her lips pressed to his, the way his fingers tangled in her hair. It was Claire, my best friend since middle school, the one who’d sworn she’d never even look at him twice.

“Claire, what the hell?” I shouted, my voice cracking as I yanked open the car door. The cold air rushed in, and she froze, her eyes wide, her lipstick smudged. Jake just stared at the steering wheel, his knuckles white. “We weren’t—it’s not what you think,” she stammered, but her voice was shaky, unconvincing.

I could smell her strawberry shampoo, the same one we’d picked out together last weekend. The scent made my stomach twist. “You think lying makes it better?” I snapped, my hands trembling. She started crying, but I couldn’t stop. “How long? How long have you been sneaking around with him?”

She didn’t answer, and that’s when I heard it—the faint buzz of my phone in my pocket. I pulled it out, the screen lighting up with a text from Jake: “We need to talk about something else.”

Claire was still crying, tears streaming down her face, mixing with the smeared lipstick. “He said he was going to break up with you,” she choked out, “he said… he said he liked me.”

The air felt thick, suffocating. My head throbbed, and I felt a wave of nausea. All the times they’d been laughing together, the inside jokes I didn’t understand, the way Jake had been pulling away from me lately… it all clicked into place, a cruel, painful puzzle.

“Get out,” I managed to say, my voice flat and hollow. “Both of you. Just…get out.”

Jake didn’t hesitate. He practically tumbled out of the car, muttering apologies as he went. Claire stayed frozen for a moment, then slowly turned towards me, her face a mess. She reached out a hand, but I flinched away.

“I’m so sorry,” she pleaded, her voice a sob. “I messed up. I ruined everything.”

“You did,” I agreed, the words devoid of any emotion. I felt nothing, just a vast, empty space where friendship used to be. The strawberry scent suddenly became overwhelmingly cloying.

Then, something shifted. The anger, the hurt, began to give way to a different feeling: a quiet, steely resolve.

“Get out,” I repeated, my voice stronger this time. “And don’t ever talk to me again.”

She nodded, her shoulders slumped, and she stumbled out of the car. I watched them both walk away, their silhouettes fading into the darkness. Then, I reached back into the car, retrieved my phone, and tossed it into the trash. The streetlight continued to flicker, casting long, distorted shadows. I took a deep breath, the cold air stinging my lungs. I had a long night ahead of me, and a future to rebuild, but for the first time since that night, I felt a spark of something – a feeling that I could handle it. I took a deep breath, the air now felt fresh and ready to start over.
