Strange Baby Monitor Reveals a Terrifying Secret

I FOUND A STRANGE BABY MONITOR ON THE BOOKSHELF AND HE FROZE

My heart hammered against my ribs when I spotted the strange, white baby monitor hidden behind the dusty old encyclopedias. We haven’t had children in five years. David walked in just as my fingers closed around its cold, smooth plastic, his face draining of color.

“What is this, David? Why is this here?” I asked, my voice cracking, clutching the device. He stammered something about a ‘joke’ or ‘friend’s donation,’ but his eyes kept darting nervously to the window. The silence in the room felt suffocating, pressing in on my chest.

“A joke? Tell me what this is really for!” I demanded, my hands trembling. He finally blurted it out, not looking at me: “It’s for the house, Sarah. Security.” Then, as my gaze swept across the room, it landed on the tiny, almost invisible red light blinking faintly, high up on the wall. It was a camera lens, staring directly back at me.

Then I heard a small click from the bedroom, and it wasn’t David.

He ran a hand through his hair, avoiding my eyes. “Look, Sarah, I know it looks bad. After the break-in last year, I just… I wanted to feel safe. The security system wasn’t enough. I wanted to be able to hear… well, anything. And the camera… it was just a cheap one online.”

“A break-in five years ago!” I yelled, incredulous. “You’ve been living with this, watching me, listening to me, for five years? And you’re only telling me now?” My mind raced, trying to grasp the enormity of his deception. Had he been listening when I confided in my sister about my career doubts? Had he watched me cry when my mother passed away? The thought was unbearable.

Suddenly, the bedroom door creaked open a fraction of an inch. Both David and I froze, staring. A small, pale hand reached out and gripped the edge of the door. Then a child, no older than three, with wide, blue eyes and a shock of blonde hair peeked around the corner.

David gasped, his face paling even further. “Who… who is that?” he stammered, his voice barely a whisper.

The child stepped fully into the room, clutching a tattered stuffed rabbit. “Mommy?” the child whispered, looking directly at me.

I felt a wave of dizziness wash over me. We hadn’t had children in five years, and before that, we had struggled with infertility. Yet, here was a child, calling me mommy, in our house. My mind struggled to make sense of it.

Then I saw it – a small, almost imperceptible wire running from the back of the baby monitor to the child’s ear. And another wire running from the child’s mouth to a small device hidden in the stuffed rabbit.

The reality hit me like a physical blow. The break-in five years ago wasn’t random. It was targeted. Someone had been living in our house, or somehow manipulating events from afar, for years. They were using David’s fear, his desire for security, against us.

I knelt down, meeting the child’s gaze. “It’s okay,” I said softly, my voice trembling but firm. “We’ll figure this out. Both of us.” Then I looked at David, his face a mask of horror and disbelief. “We’re going to figure this out together.” The red light on the wall still blinked, a silent witness to the nightmare unfolding. But for the first time in five years, I didn’t feel completely alone. We were in this together, and somehow, we would unravel the truth.
