Crimson Cake, Missing Bride: A Wedding Turns Deadly

THE WEDDING CAKE WAS STAINED RED AND MY SISTER WAS GONE
I stumbled into the reception hall, the sweet, sickly smell of roses and forgotten food thick in the air. The giant tiered wedding cake stood lopsided, a terrible crimson blotch blooming across the pristine white icing. My heart hammered, instantly knowing something was terribly wrong. It wasn’t frosting, but something much darker, staining the delicate sugar flowers.
I frantically scanned the nearly empty room, calling Sarah’s name, but only the quiet hum of the air conditioning answered. Her elaborate veil lay crumpled on the floor near a discarded glass of champagne, glinting under the dimming lights. A single diamond earring sparked ominously beside it, cold dread creeping through me.
My brother-in-law, Mark, appeared suddenly from the kitchen, wiping his hands on a damp towel, his eyes too bright and unnaturally still. ‘Where is she, Mark? What happened to Sarah?’ I demanded, my voice shaking uncontrollably as I pointed at the ruined cake. He just stared at the messy confection, then at me.
He took a slow, deep breath, and I noticed a fresh, deep cut across his knuckles, barely hidden, sticky and red. ‘She… she just left,’ he mumbled, his voice flat, but the lie hung heavy in the silence. An icy realization washed over me, the cold stone floor feeling like solid ice.
Then a sharp, distinct chime echoed from inside his coat pocket.

I shoved Mark away and ran towards the bathrooms, my mind racing. The men’s room was empty, but a faint whimpering led me to the women’s. The door was locked. “Sarah! Sarah, it’s me! Open the door!”
Silence. Then, a weak voice, barely audible, “He’s… he’s still here.”
I slammed my shoulder against the door, again and again, until the flimsy lock splintered and gave way. Inside, the scene was horrifying. Sarah lay crumpled behind a overturned trash can, her white dress torn and stained. Mark was kneeling beside her, a small knife clutched in his hand. His eyes were wild, unfocused.
“Get away from her!” I screamed, adrenaline surging through me. He looked up, startled, but didn’t move.
Before I could react, a police siren wailed in the distance, growing closer. Mark flinched, his grip on the knife loosening. He looked at Sarah, then at me, his face a mask of despair and regret. He dropped the knife and slowly backed away, raising his hands in surrender just as the first officers burst into the room.
Sarah was rushed to the hospital, where she recovered from her injuries. Mark was arrested and charged. The wedding, of course, was over. The stained cake and the crumpled veil became a grim reminder of a day that was supposed to be filled with joy, but instead was filled with terror. While the physical wounds healed, the emotional scars ran deep, but Sarah, with the support of her family, would eventually find her way back to happiness. The incident revealed a hidden darkness within Mark, a darkness that had nearly cost Sarah her life, but ultimately exposed him before it was too late.
