Sister’s New Car: College Funds Used, Future Stolen

Story image
MY SISTER JUST BOUGHT A BRAND NEW CAR WITH MY COLLEGE TUITION MONEY

I saw the gleaming red paint of the new convertible parked in her driveway and my stomach dropped instantly. The engine still hummed, a low, satisfied purr that grated on my nerves as I walked closer. I remembered the day I wired her the last $5,000, trusting her desperate pleas about a medical emergency. My hands felt clammy gripping the hot leather steering wheel of my old beat-up sedan.

She emerged from the house, a huge smile plastered across her face, keys jingling. “Isn’t she beautiful, sis?” she chirped, completely oblivious, I hoped. I swallowed hard, bile rising in my throat, a bitter taste. “Where did you get the money for this, Sarah?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

Her smile faltered, replaced by a defensive scowl. “What’s it to you? It’s mine, I earned it.” The brutal sun glared off the chrome, burning my eyes, almost mocking me. “It’s *my* money, Sarah! The money for my nursing degree, my future!” I shouted, voice cracking with disbelief and pure rage.

She scoffed, crossing her arms, her eyes hard and cold. “Oh, that? I needed it more. You’ll figure it out, you always do.” Her words felt like a physical slap, leaving a cold, hollow ache in my chest. The weight of her betrayal pressed down, suffocating me.

Her phone vibrated on the passenger seat, showing a notification from the university student loans office.

👇 *Full story continued in the comments…*I stared at the notification, a fresh wave of nausea washing over me. She had probably seen it too, a small flicker of guilt crossing her face before she quickly masked it. I felt a cold, detached anger bloom in my chest. This wasn’t just about the money; it was about trust, about a future she had stolen.

“You used it,” I stated flatly, my voice regaining some strength, the initial shock beginning to fade. “You used the money knowing what it was for.”

Sarah’s jaw clenched. “Look, it was a loan. You can pay me back. I can get you a job here, it’s not that big of a deal.”

“A job here?” I laughed, a hollow, bitter sound. “Where? In your perfect life? A life built on a lie? I have worked myself to the bone to try and get ahead. To be where I am now.”

I took a step towards the car, my hand clenching into a fist. “And what about the medical emergency, Sarah? What happened?”

She hesitated, her bravado crumbling slightly. “It… it wasn’t as serious as I made it out to be.”

“So you lied,” I concluded, my voice flat. I needed to get away, I thought, from the betrayal that was still fresh in my mind.

I turned and walked back towards my car, the red convertible a searing symbol of my stolen future. “I will handle this.” I took a deep breath, feeling my tears welling up. I had two choices now: walk away or find a way to pick myself up.

I drove the old sedan to the side, and began to prepare for the next steps: calling the university to explain the situation, documenting the financial fraud, and talking to a lawyer.

Later, I would find a way forward, perhaps getting a loan. It was not going to be easy.

Weeks turned into months, filled with stress and legal paperwork. I cut ties with Sarah. The silence was a comfort in a twisted way. I worked multiple part-time jobs to make ends meet, balancing them with my classes. The road ahead was long and arduous.

One day, I received a letter. A legal document. Sarah’s car was being repossessed. She was unable to keep up with payments. It was a painful reminder of the situation, but also a measure of justice, I thought.

Eventually, I got a small loan, enough to continue my studies. I graduated nursing school, top of my class. Standing there in my white coat, a symbol of my hard work, my determination, and my future. I got my nursing degree.

I looked at the diploma, a smile stretching across my face. I had done it. I was going to make something of myself.

I was going to be a nurse.
