The Doctor’s Strange Look: A Mother’s Nightmare Unfolds

THE DOCTOR STARED AT ME STRANGELY AS THEY RUSHED MY SON AWAY
The sirens were still screaming, red lights strobing against the ER wall as they wheeled Liam in.
My hands were shaking so violently I couldn’t even wipe the tears from my face, the cold, unforgiving linoleum floor pressing against my knees where I’d collapsed earlier. Nurses spoke in hushed, urgent tones, their voices a blurred, terrifying hum that vibrated through the air. All I could focus on was Liam’s pale, small face disappearing down the sterile corridor, leaving me alone in the blinding fluorescent light.
Then Dr. Mendez stepped out of the trauma room, his usually kind eyes narrowed into slits, a strange look of knowing betrayal etched onto his face when he finally looked at me. “Mrs. Davies,” he began, his voice low, almost a chilling whisper that cut through the silence, “there’s something critical we need to discuss about Liam’s blood type. It’s… it’s not what your existing records state.”
My heart pounded, a frantic, desperate drum in my chest, threatening to burst right through my ribs. The sharp, sterile hospital smell filled my nostrils, suddenly suffocating, sickening, making me dizzy. I tried desperately to speak, but no words came out, only a choked, ragged gasp as a heavy, cold dread settled over me, chilling me to the bone. He held up a flimsy chart, his gaze still pointedly avoiding mine.
Just then, the double doors at the end of the hall burst open with a jarring clap and my mother pushed through, her eyes wide with raw, animalistic panic. “What happened?” she cried, her voice echoing too loudly in the otherwise quiet, tense space.
Her gaze immediately went to Dr. Mendez, and I saw the recognition, the terror, in her eyes.
