Principal’s Call: Chloe, a Woman, and a Shocking Discovery

THE PRINCIPAL JUST CALLED ME ABOUT CHLOE AND ANOTHER WOMAN
The school principal’s voice was too calm when she asked me to come to her office immediately, no explanation given. My stomach tightened into a knot as I drove, imagining every worst-case scenario from a playground accident to a disciplinary hearing. I pulled into the parking lot, my hands feeling clammy on the steering wheel.
The fluorescent lights in the main office hummed with a low buzz that grated on my nerves as I walked in. I saw a woman already sitting there, facing away from me, her dark hair falling in a cascade down her back. My heart skipped a beat when I noticed the familiar, small floral print of the scarf around her neck – the one my husband bought me for our anniversary last year.
“Mrs. Henderson, thank you for coming so quickly,” the principal began, her tone still unnervingly level. She gestured to the other woman, who turned slowly. My breath caught in my throat. It was Sarah, the new HR manager at Mark’s company. “Sarah has also been listed as Chloe’s emergency contact, which we just discovered this morning.”
Sarah’s eyes were wide and filled with an emotion I couldn’t quite place, but it wasn’t shock. The principal continued, explaining a mix-up with the enrollment forms. “Who in the hell are you?” I demanded, the words raw and hot in my mouth. My vision blurred around the edges, feeling like a heavy wool blanket had been thrown over me in a desert heat.
The garage door started opening. But I hadn’t told anyone I was here.

“Perhaps we can discuss this more privately, Mrs. Henderson,” the principal said, her eyes darting between Sarah and me. “Let’s step into my office.”
The walk to the principal’s office felt like an eternity. Every step echoed the pounding in my head. I sank into the offered chair, struggling to regain my composure. Sarah followed, her movements hesitant.
“Sarah, would you mind waiting outside for a moment?” the principal asked gently. Sarah nodded, her gaze locking with mine for a fraction of a second before she slipped out.
The principal turned to me, her face etched with concern. “Mrs. Henderson, I understand this is upsetting. We’re trying to understand how this happened as well. It appears Sarah listed herself as an emergency contact and provided… documentation.”
My blood ran cold. “Documentation? What kind of documentation?”
She hesitated. “She submitted a form claiming to be Chloe’s stepmother. Apparently, she also provided a copy of a marriage certificate.”
The room spun. A marriage certificate? My Mark and this woman? It was impossible. I’d just seen him this morning. We’d had breakfast together. He’d kissed me goodbye.
“I don’t understand. There must be some mistake,” I managed, my voice barely a whisper.
The principal sighed. “That’s what we are hoping. I needed to notify you so we could get to the bottom of this.”
Just then, the school secretary buzzed the principal. “Mrs. Henderson, a Mr. Henderson is here to pick up Chloe. He says he received a call about her being sick.”
I stared at the principal, my mind reeling. “That’s him. That’s Mark. Let me see him.”
The principal, looking bewildered, agreed and instructed the secretary to send him in.
Mark walked in, his face a mask of concern. “What’s wrong? Is Chloe okay?” He looked from me to the principal, clearly confused.
“Mark,” I began, my voice trembling, “who is Sarah?”
He frowned. “Sarah? She’s a colleague from work. Why?”
I gestured to the principal. “She’s listed as Chloe’s stepmother. Apparently, you’re married to her.”
Mark’s face drained of color. He stared at me, then at the principal, his mouth opening and closing soundlessly. “This… this is insane. I don’t even know what to say.” He turned back to me, pleading. “Honey, you know I would never…”
At that moment, Sarah burst back into the office. “Mark!” she cried, her voice laced with desperation. “Tell her! Tell her about us!”
Mark looked from Sarah to me, his face etched with guilt and fear. He finally looked at me. “I can explain, I know this is too much all at once and I did a bad thing. Sarah and I, we’ve been seeing each other for a few months. I was going to tell you, I promise, it was going to happen after this business trip.”
He did not marry her, however. Sarah was simply trying to force his hand after becoming insecure about the relationship with Mark. The marriage certificate was fake.
My heart shattered. The betrayal was a physical blow. I stood up, my legs shaking. “Take care of Chloe. I’m done.”
I walked out of the principal’s office, leaving Mark and Sarah to their tangled web of lies. As I drove away, tears streamed down my face. My life as I knew it was over, but somewhere deep inside, a small voice whispered that I would be okay. I would rebuild, and I would find happiness again. This was not the ending I wanted, but it was the beginning of something new.
