Stolen iPad, Cocaine, and Consequences

Story image
I STOLE MY BEST FRIEND’S IPAD AND SOLD IT TO BUY COCAINE AT THE ABANDONED WAREHOUSE.

As I stood in Rachel’s bedroom, the ipad clutched in my sweaty palm, she spun around, her eyes blazing. “How could you, Emily?” she spat, her voice trembling with rage. The air was thick with the scent of her perfume, a sweet and floral smell that now made my stomach churn. I felt the softness of her plush carpet beneath my feet as I shifted uncomfortably, avoiding her gaze. “You had no right,” she seethed, her words cutting deep. I winced as her words hit their mark, the pain mingling with the bitter taste of guilt in my mouth.

I had been desperate, and the allure of quick cash had clouded my judgment. The abandoned warehouse on 5th and Main was a dingy, dimly lit den of shady deals, the smell of mildew and decay clinging to every surface. I had felt a rush of adrenaline as I handed over the ipad and received the bag of cocaine in return, its cold, smooth texture a stark contrast to the turmoil brewing inside me. Now, facing Rachel’s fury, I realized the true cost of my actions.

As I turned to flee, Rachel’s icy tone stopped me dead: “You’re not just a thief, you’re a liar.”
The police sirens were getting louder outside.
👇 Full story continued in the comments…My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the rising wail of the sirens. Rachel’s accusation, cold and sharp, felt like another blow. The air in the room crackled with her fury and my shame. I could feel the cold sweat trickling down my back. There was nowhere to run, no lie left to tell. The sweet perfume of her room now felt suffocating, a cruel reminder of the life I had just shattered for a fleeting, desperate high.

The sound of heavy boots on the porch and a loud, insistent knocking at the front door cut through the air. Rachel flinched, her eyes wide, the raw anger in them momentarily replaced by a flicker of fear. I stood frozen, unable to move, unable to speak, my mind a chaotic mess of panic and regret. The knocking became more urgent, followed by shouts: “Police! Open up!”

Rachel turned back to me, her gaze piercing, her expression unreadable. It wasn’t pity, and it wasn’t just anger anymore. It was a profound, heartbreaking disappointment. For a split second, I saw the years of friendship, the shared secrets, the laughter, flash in her eyes before they hardened. She didn’t say anything else. She just turned and walked towards the bedroom door, towards the inevitable confrontation.

Before she reached the door, it burst open, two uniformed officers filling the frame. Their eyes swept the room, landing on Rachel, then on me, standing rigid and guilty in the middle of the plush carpet. One officer, a stern-faced woman, addressed Rachel first. “Are you Rachel Miller? We received a call about a disturbance and possible theft.”

Rachel nodded, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands. “Yes. I’m Rachel. And this… this is Emily.” She gestured towards me, and the officer’s gaze shifted, sharp and assessing. The air seemed to thicken, pressing down on me. I felt utterly exposed, the weight of my actions crushing.

The officer looked from me to Rachel, then back. “Can you explain what’s happening, ma’am?”

Rachel took a deep breath, her eyes meeting mine one last time before she spoke. Her voice was low, but clear. “She… she stole my iPad and sold it.” Her voice broke slightly on the last word. “I just found out.”

It was over. No more lies, no more running. The second officer moved towards me. “We need you to come with us, ma’am.”

As they escorted me out of the room, past Rachel who stood pale and silent by the doorway, I couldn’t bring myself to look at her again. The lost iPad felt insignificant compared to the friendship I had thrown away. The cocaine felt like ash in my memory. The ‘normal’ consequences of my desperate act were unfolding before me: the loss of trust, the breakdown of a bond, the cold reality of facing the law, alone. I was a thief, a liar, and now, just another arrest.
