A Twin Discovered, A Family Shattered

Story image

THE DOCTOR SAID, ‘YOUR BROTHER HAS A TWIN BROTHER?’

My heart pounded as the doctor flipped through charts, his brow furrowed, a bead of sweat on his temple. I could smell the sharp, clean scent of antiseptic, making my stomach churn with a sickening lurch.

“Ma’am, are you absolutely certain about your family history?” he asked, pushing the thick folder closer and pointing to a name I didn’t recognize, yet felt strangely familiar. “This patient has identical DNA markers to your brother’s. And the birth date… it matches his exactly, down to the minute.” My breath caught in my throat, a dry gasp. “We have no record of a second sibling,” I insisted, my voice cracking, the cold air from the vent doing nothing to calm my rapidly spiraling thoughts.

He pushed a tablet across the desk, showing a faded, sepia-toned photo of two tiny babies swaddled together from thirty years ago. My brother, definitely. The same button nose. But then, a second baby, almost identical, sleeping peacefully beside him. My world tilted, spinning wildly. The fluorescent lights overhead hummed, a persistent, irritating buzz, too bright, making my eyes ache and water as a wave of nausea washed over me. This couldn’t be real, this had to be some kind of clerical error, a sick joke.

I felt a cold dread spread through my chest, a sudden, chilling realization that this wasn’t a mistake at all, but something far, far worse. Before I could even begin to process the implications, before I could demand an explanation, the examination room door clicked open, silently.

A strange man in a dark suit just stepped into the waiting room, staring directly at me.

👇 Full story continued in the comments…He was tall, with a face that seemed carved from granite, his eyes like chips of flint, cold and unreadable. He gave a slight, almost imperceptible nod towards the doctor, who immediately straightened, his demeanor shifting from concerned to… fearful. A knot of unease twisted in my gut.

“Madam,” the man began, his voice a low rumble that seemed to vibrate the air, “We need to discuss your brother’s… condition. And, potentially, your own.” His gaze flicked to the photo on the tablet, then back to me, assessing, calculating. “There are… complications. Unforeseen circumstances.”

“What are you talking about?” I managed, my voice barely a whisper. My mind raced, piecing together the fragmented clues, the cryptic warnings. Twin brother. Identical DNA. Something “far, far worse.” This wasn’t a medical anomaly; it was something else entirely.

The man in the suit ignored my question, instead producing a sleek, metallic device from his pocket – a phone, but unlike any I’d ever seen. He held it to his ear, speaking in a language I didn’t recognize. The doctor watched him with a mixture of apprehension and deference, as if he were accustomed to this strange ritual.

Finally, the man lowered the device. “The necessary arrangements have been made. We will take your brother to a secure facility. For his protection, and yours.”

“Protection from what?” I demanded, rising to my feet, ignoring the doctor’s attempts to gently push me back down. My survival instincts kicked in. I had to know the truth, even if it shattered the world I knew.

The man paused, his gaze unwavering. “Let’s just say… your brother is not entirely… human.” His words hung in the air, a chilling accusation that sliced through my disbelief. “And his… other half… is currently active.”

A chill ran down my spine. The implications sunk in: a dangerous twin, a shadowy organization, and now, my life, and my brother’s, were in grave danger. Without hesitation, I decided my brother was not going anywhere without me, despite any unknown dangers.

I took a deep breath, and said “I’m going with you.”
He looked at me, and a slight curve appeared in his lips. “Very well, Madam. You are more courageous than you appear.”
He nodded, and turned to the doctor. “Inform the others.”

The doctor’s face drained of color. He murmured a response, and after a moment turned to me, and said, “If you must know. It’s about time you knew”.
“The twins were not supposed to be born. They are a mistake.”
“They are experiments, Madam, and your brother, has always been the unstable one”

The man looked at me, and motioned toward the door. “Time is of the essence. Come, and be ready to face the truth”
“The truth?”
“Of the twin. Of yourself, and of what is about to be unleashed”
“What about to be unleashed?”
“Your brother, is not one, but two. And one of them…is coming for you”.
He nodded again, and turned towards the door.
The door opened, and a dark shadow fell across the floor.

I took one last look at the picture on the tablet. Two babies, together. One was my brother. The other, a mystery.
My heart pounded. But I stepped forward, into the unknown. It was the only choice.
