My Sister’s Engagement Ring and a Secret

MY SISTER DROPPED HER ENGAGEMENT RING ON MY KITCHEN COUNTER WITHOUT SPEAKING
My sister dropped the small velvet box containing her engagement ring on my kitchen counter without a word, her hands trembling slightly. She refused to meet my gaze, instead fixing her eyes on the familiar pattern of the chipped tile floor beneath her feet. The air felt thick, charged with unspoken words I instantly dreaded hearing spill out into the quiet room we shared. I picked up the surprisingly heavy box, feeling the cheap, worn velvet covering rough between my fingers as I held it.
“I just… I can’t marry him,” she finally whispered, her voice barely audible, a single tear tracking a clean path down her smudged cheek. My entire body went cold, a heavy dread settling in my stomach that threatened to make me sick right there. I pushed the small box back towards her across the counter, my own confusion quickly turning into a desperate fear that tightened in my chest. “What in God’s name are you talking about? Are you seriously backing out of the wedding this late?”
She shook her head slowly, the movement minimal as if she barely had the energy to do it. It wasn’t about cold feet, I realized with a sickening jolt; this was about something far more significant and utterly destructive involving the two of them. Her shoulders slumped forward, defeated, and she finally lifted her gaze to meet mine, her eyes red-rimmed and overflowing with absolute despair I couldn’t understand.
“He knows,” she mumbled again, her voice barely a breath now, gripping my arm tight enough that I knew it would leave marks later this evening. The suffocating weight of those two simple words crashed down around me, stealing the air from my lungs and making the entire room spin slightly around us. I pulled away slightly, needing desperate space from her frantic energy to process the shocking truth she was admitting without saying more.
Her phone screen suddenly lit up, showing his name followed by an unknown incoming number.
