THE CEO’S HAND TREMBLED WHEN HE SAW THE DOCUMENT WITH MY NAME ON IT

The lawyer cleared his throat and held up the faded envelope, its edges crinkled with age.

The boardroom fell silent, every pair of eyes fixed on the brittle paper he held aloft. A strange, musty smell wafted from it, like forgotten attics and dust motes dancing in sunbeams, as he carefully pulled out the contents. My palms were suddenly slick with cold sweat, the fluorescent lights overhead felt too bright, too revealing.

Mr. Henderson, usually so composed, let out a sharp, strangled gasp that cut through the quiet. “That’s impossible,” he choked out, his face pale and drawn tight. “Who gave you that? This changes *everything*!” The tension in the room was a physical weight pressing down on my chest.

The lawyer cleared his throat again, giving Mr. Henderson a cool look, and began to read aloud, his voice slow and deliberate. It was a clause, buried deep within an old, forgotten addendum to the original company charter, explicitly detailing a percentage, a transfer date long past, and my name, printed there clear as day alongside initials I didn’t recognize. A lifetime of assumptions, of being overlooked, shattered in that instant.

Just as he reached the critical sentence confirming the transfer, confirming everything the document implied, the heavy oak door at the back of the room burst open behind me with a loud, splintering bang that made us all jump.

And a security guard I didn’t recognize stepped forward, his eyes fixed on me, holding something small and metallic.
