Hidden Phone, Hidden Affair

MY HUSBAND LEFT A BURNER PHONE INSIDE HIS GRIMY WORK BOOT

My fingers brushed something hard and cold deep inside Mark’s dirty work boot liner tucked by the back door. The leather felt stiff and gritty under my touch, the smell of damp earth clinging to it as I pulled it out. It was a small, cheap-looking cell phone, screen dark.

It flickered to life when I hit the side button, the bright light making me squint in the dim hallway. There were only a few contacts. One name made my stomach clench instantly: “Emergency – C.” I opened the texts; they weren’t old. They were from this morning.

He walked in then, coat damp from the rain outside, and his face went pale seeing the phone in my hand. “What is that? Where did you get that?” he stammered, his voice tight with panic. I held it up, my hand trembling slightly. “Emergency – C? Who is C, Mark? And why do you have a hidden phone?” He wouldn’t meet my eyes, mumbling something about “work.”

But the texts weren’t about work. They discussed meeting up later, arrangements I knew nothing about. Then I scrolled past a blurry picture that still made my blood run cold, right before a new message popped up.

Then a new message popped up at the top of the screen from ‘Emergency – C’.

My breath hitched. “Eight? Tonight? Mark, what is going on?”

He finally looked at me, his eyes pleading. “Sarah, please, it’s not what you think. Let me explain.”

“Explain what? Explain why you have a secret phone? Explain who ‘Emergency – C’ is and why you’re making plans behind my back?” I felt a tear trace a path down my cheek. “Are you having an affair?” The question hung in the air, heavy and devastating.

He flinched. “No! No, it’s not like that at all. It’s… complicated. It’s about my brother.”

My brother-in-law, Chris, was a recovering addict. Mark had always been fiercely protective of him, but Chris was a constant source of stress in their lives. “Chris? What does Chris have to do with this?”

Mark ran a hand through his wet hair, leaving streaks of dirt on his forehead. “He… he relapsed. A few weeks ago. He begged me not to tell anyone, especially his wife. He’s been staying in a halfway house an hour away. ‘Emergency – C’ is him. He uses a burner phone to keep it secret.”

I stared at the phone in my hand, then back at Mark. The blurry picture flashed through my mind. It was a picture of a building, not someone’s face. “And the meeting tonight?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

“He needs help, Sarah. He’s struggling. He’s been calling to arrange a ride, someone to talk to. His support worker isn’t working tonight. He needs me. I didn’t want to worry you, and I didn’t want Chris’s wife to find out.”

Relief washed over me, so intense it almost made me buckle. But it was quickly followed by anger. “You lied to me! You kept this secret! You made me think…”

He reached for my hand. “I know, I know. I messed up. I should have told you. I was trying to protect everyone, but I only made things worse. I’m so sorry.”

I pulled my hand away. “Protecting Chris by hurting me? That’s not how this works, Mark.” I took a deep breath, trying to calm the storm raging inside me. “We need to talk about this. About secrets, about trust, about how we handle difficult situations. But first,” I looked at the phone, the text message still glowing, “you need to call Chris back. And you need to tell him he’s not alone in this, because I’m going with you tonight. And maybe this whole thing can be something we face together as a family.”
