Betrayal at the Engagement Party

“I CAUGHT MY BEST FRIEND LYING TO ME ABOUT MY FIANCÉ AT OUR ENGAGEMENT PARTY.”
I stormed across the room, ignoring the clatter of champagne glasses on the tray as the waiter dodged me. My heart was pounding, my fingers clutching the crumpled piece of paper I’d found in her purse. “Explain this,” I hissed, shoving it in her face. Her eyes widened, and the color drained from her cheeks. “It’s not what you think,” she stammered, her voice trembling like a fragile string about to snap.
The scent of her perfume—musky and sweet—filled the space between us, mingling with the sharp tang of spilled wine on the carpet. My skin prickled with heat, and my stomach churned like a stormy sea. “You’ve been texting him? Behind my back?” I hissed louder, my voice cracking under the weight of betrayal.
She opened her mouth to speak, but the words caught in her throat like tangled threads. The room seemed to spin, and I could feel the weight of every pair of eyes on us. “He’s been lying to you too,” she whispered, her voice barely audible over the faint hum of the string quartet.
My breath hitched as her words sank in, and I froze, my mind racing with questions I wasn’t ready to ask.
The truth was far worse than I ever imagined.
