Forbidden Glances and a Deadly Secret

🔴 MY BOSS’S OFFICE: HE SAID “DON’T LOOK,” BUT I DID
I heard him yelling into the phone, and the door wasn’t quite shut like it should have been.
He slammed the receiver down, then unlocked his bottom drawer — I only glanced for a second, but it was definitely a gun. “Didn’t I tell you not to look?” he asked, his voice was like ice; the air conditioning suddenly felt ten degrees colder.
My heart was hammering against my ribs, and I swear I could smell the cheap cologne he always wears. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, mocking me. I just wanted to disappear. “I…I need to ask you about the Johnson account.”
He stared at me for what felt like forever, his eyes hard and unreadable. Then he sighed, ran a hand through his thinning hair, and said, “Get in here, Sarah. You need to know something.”
But as I stepped into his office, I saw someone slumped in the chair behind his desk— and recognized her instantly.

Sarah stepped into the office, her eyes immediately drawn to the figure slumped in the chair behind his large mahogany desk. Her breath caught in her throat. It was Brenda. Brenda from Sterling Corp, their main competitor, tied to the chair with what looked like duct tape, her eyes wide with terror, and a gag covering her mouth.
“Brenda?” Sarah whispered, the name a question and a horrified realization.
Her boss closed the door behind her, the sound soft but final. He didn’t immediately address Brenda. Instead, he walked towards Sarah, his expression a complex mix of fear and grim determination. The icy edge was gone from his voice, replaced by a weary urgency.
“Yes, Brenda,” he confirmed quietly, running his hand over his face again. “She was… trying to steal something. Something critical. I caught her. Or rather, I caught evidence she was about to sell it.” He gestured vaguely towards the desk drawer where the gun lay hidden. “Things escalated. The call you heard… that was with someone she was working with. It got… complicated.”
He stopped a few feet from Sarah, his gaze unwavering. “Sarah, I told you not to look because I didn’t want you involved. But you did. And now you see this.” He motioned towards Brenda with a tilt of his head. “You understand the position we’re in. Both of us.”
Brenda whimpered from the chair, a muffled, desperate sound.
“What are you going to do?” Sarah finally managed to ask, her voice shaky. The smell of cheap cologne, the buzzing lights, Brenda’s wide eyes – it all swam together in a surreal nightmare.
Her boss looked from Brenda back to Sarah, his gaze settling on her face as if searching for something. “That’s what you need to know,” he said, his voice low and serious. “This isn’t just about corporate espionage anymore. It’s something else entirely. And I need help figuring out the next step. A step that protects us. Both of us.” He paused, the weight of his words hanging heavy in the air. “We need to make sure this… stays here. And we need to decide what happens next.”
