The Board Meeting Secret

Story image
I HEARD GARY TELLING SARAH ABOUT THE BOARD MEETING THROUGH HIS DOOR

I pressed my ear against the wood, heart hammering, the stale office air catching in my throat.

Their voices were low, muffled, but Gary’s distinct rumble and Sarah’s sharp laugh cut through the silence of the hallway. I could smell the faint metallic tang of the old heating system kicking in again. I knew they were talking about the regional manager position. The one I interviewed for last week.

“He’s good, sure, but he lacks…” Gary trailed off. Then Sarah said something I couldn’t quite catch, followed by Gary’s loud whisper, “No, that’s *exactly* why we need Sarah. She’s got the ‘vision,’ upper management loves it.” My hands started trembling, cold sweat breaking out on my palms despite the office heat.

I clutched my briefcase tighter, my knuckles white. All those late nights, the proposals, the promises Gary made about *my* potential. It all felt like a cruel, elaborate joke now. The fluorescent lights above seemed to buzz louder, mocking me.

Suddenly, the door handle turned.

Then a voice behind me whispered, “Thought you had the morning off.”

👇 Full story continued in the comments…I spun around, breath catching in my throat. It was Jane, the head of HR, holding a tablet, her expression unreadable but her eyes sharp.

“Thought you had the morning off,” she repeated, her voice quiet but cutting through the hallway tension.

My mind raced, trying to concoct an excuse. “Oh, uh, Jane. Hi. Just… came in to drop something off… forgot my… umbrella?” My voice was thin, unconvincing even to me.

Jane’s gaze lingered on my sweating face and the way I was clutching my briefcase. “Right. Well, bit early for umbrellas, isn’t it? Especially when it’s not raining.” A slight, knowing smile played on her lips.

Before I could fumble another lie, the door behind me clicked open. Gary stepped out, his face changing from concentration to surprise as he saw me. Sarah was right behind him.

“Oh, [Narrator’s Name]! What are you doing here?” Gary asked, perhaps a little too loudly, glancing quickly between me and Jane. Sarah just offered a small, tight smile.

My cheeks burned. Standing there, caught red-handed outside Gary’s door, with the head of HR and the two people I just heard discussing my failure, felt like a spotlight had been thrown on my deepest insecurities. The overheard words “he lacks…” and “Exactly why we need Sarah” crashed into the reality of their faces.

I couldn’t speak, couldn’t meet their eyes. The bitter taste of betrayal filled my mouth. All I could manage was a small nod towards Jane, a mumbled “Excuse me,” and I turned and walked away, leaving them standing there in the hallway. Each step echoed the sound of a door slamming shut on my own aspirations.
