Sister’s Bracelet, Hidden Secrets, and a Broken Lock

I FOUND MY SISTER’S BRACELET UNDER MY BED AFTER SHE VISITED LAST NIGHT
The minute Sarah walked out the door, I felt the wrongness settle deep in my stomach like a stone. Finding that cheap metal glittering under the corner of the bed frame made my breath catch painfully in my chest. It was Sarah’s, no question, the clunky heart charm dangling from it was unmistakable. She swore she lost it last weekend at the park, even put out feelers on Facebook; but here it was, exactly where she’d been sitting.
Her visit felt off the whole time, fake smiles and questions about where I kept things, her gaze constantly drifting towards the bedroom. Just before she left, her voice dropped to a whisper, “Everything’s going to be okay soon, you’ll see.” It felt less like comfort, more like a chilling promise whispered right into my ear. The sickly sweet scent of her cheap body spray still hung thick in the air by the door where she hugged me goodbye.
A cold dread washed over me, like icy water pooling in my veins, numbing my fingers. I scrambled back into the bedroom, heart hammering against my ribs, searching frantically, needing to know why she left it there, what she was looking for. Then I saw it – the small locked box tucked away at the back of the closet beneath the old photo albums, pulled out and slightly ajar, my lock broken cleanly in half.
Then my phone chimed, a message from my husband, her name was on the screen.
