The Unexpected Envelope

I PICKED UP THE DROPPED ENVELOPE AND SAW MY BOSS’S HANDWRITING

I bent down to grab the fallen envelope from under the desk and saw his familiar, spidery handwriting across the seal.

It felt heavier than a typical letter, the thick paper crisp and almost brittle under my fingertips. A faint, lingering scent of old pipe tobacco and worn leather upholstery hung in the quiet office air, the late afternoon light catching dust motes dancing in a sunbeam.

One top corner was slightly torn, just enough to let my eyes snag on unfamiliar legal wording typed in an old-fashioned, heavy font. My heart started a frantic, unreasonable thumping against my ribs, a cold wave of dread spreading from my chest down to my fingertips.

Then I saw the names – not clients I recognized from decades here, but family members I’d genuinely never heard him mention before today’s meeting. One phrase, bolded and underlined multiple times, seemed to scream off the page at me: “…immediate and irrevocable transfer of all company assets upon immediate effect to [Name Redacted]…”

A distinct floorboard creak echoed sharply from the hallway just outside the closed door. My stomach lurched violently into my throat, and I instinctively shoved the thick envelope back onto the floor where I found it, just as the door handle turned.

Then his son stood there, eyes wide, holding an identical envelope clutched tightly in his hand.
