Rusty Box Holds a Terrifying Secret

FOUND A RUSTY BOX IN THE ATTIC AND IT HAD MORE THAN OLD PICTURES

Searching for holiday decorations, my hand brushed something hard hidden behind a beam. The box was surprisingly heavy, a dull, rusty grey, tucked deep in the back corner where spiders spun webs. Dust coated everything, clinging instantly to my clothes and making the air thick and difficult to breathe up here. It wasn’t locked, just sealed shut by years of time and grit, forcing my fingers to feel raw as I carefully pried the lid open.

Inside weren’t cherished old photos or mementos, but bundles and bundles of yellowed letters tied with brittle, snapped ribbon. They smelled faintly of old, forgotten perfume and the musty scent of closed spaces that hadn’t seen light in years. The ink on the envelopes was faded but somehow still legible, bearing addresses from completely unfamiliar towns years ago. My heart started hammering hard and fast seeing names written in that script I didn’t recognize at all.

I unfolded one letter carefully, the fragile paper crackling softly in the quiet attic air. It wasn’t a typical love letter, not exactly, but something far more calculated – a detailed plan outlining movements and meetings. “What in the hell is all that?” my husband’s voice suddenly cut through the silence, making me jump violently. He stood frozen at the top of the attic stairs, his eyes wide and locked onto the box.

I couldn’t form words, just stared from him back down at the date on the letter – it was from last month, terrifyingly recent. The address listed was local, less than ten miles from our street. It talked about meeting up with ‘Clara’ to ‘finalize things’, a name I’d never heard him mention, ever. The bottom of the box wasn’t empty; a small, plain flip phone lay beneath the bundles.
