A Kind Act, A Lucky Break

OH DEAR. IT SEEMS MY WALLET HAS GONE MISSING. MY APOLOGIES. I’LL NEED TO RETURN FOR THESE ARTICLES AT A LATER TIME,” Mary told the clerk, who had begun collecting the goods and returning them to their places. Just then, Mary fastened her handbag, getting ready to depart, when the young fellow waiting behind her in the queue spoke. “Hold on, madam. You haven’t selected a large number of items anyway. I will cover the cost of them,” he offered. He couldn’t have exceeded the age of 12 years, and Mary observed that he didn’t appear especially prosperous. “Oh, absolutely not. I couldn’t inconvenience you in that manner,” Mary responded. “I truly want to, madam,” he maintained. The boy explained, while paying for everything Mary had chosen, “At times, it is necessary to perform kind deeds, and providence will compensate us subsequently, correct? My grandmother constantly says that.” Fortunately, the collection consisted of only a few necessary items. Several days afterward, a rapping sound reached the boy from his door.Several days afterward, a rapping sound reached the boy from his door. He opened it to find Mary standing there, a warm smile on her face. “Hello there, young man,” she said softly. He recognised her instantly, a look of mild surprise replacing his usual quiet demeanor.

“Oh, hello, madam,” he replied, a little hesitant.

“Please, may I come in for just a moment?” she asked. He stepped aside, opening the door wider to allow her entry. Once inside their small, tidy living room, Mary looked around for a moment, then turned back to him.

“I found my wallet,” she announced, a relieved expression crossing her features. “It had slipped down behind the seat in my car. I felt absolutely terrible about that day.” She reached into her own handbag and pulled out a crisp bill, handing it to him. “Here is the cost of those items you so generously paid for. And please, take a little extra for your trouble. You truly saved me from such embarrassment.”

The boy took the money hesitantly. “Oh, you didn’t have to, madam. My grandmother always says…”

Mary held up a hand, smiling. “Yes, I remember what you said. ‘It is necessary to perform kind deeds, and providence will compensate us subsequently.’ Well, today, I believe providence has sent *me* to be the compensation, not just for the money, but for the wonderful lesson you taught me. Your kindness, especially when you didn’t seem to have much yourself, was truly remarkable.” She paused, looking at him thoughtfully. “What is your name, young man?”

“It’s Thomas,” he said.

“Thomas,” she repeated. “Thomas, your grandmother is a very wise woman. Your act of kindness touched me deeply. You see, I work at the local library, and we have a program that helps young people with their studies, or perhaps find opportunities. I would love to talk to your grandmother or parents, if they are around, about how we might be able to help you, perhaps with books, or maybe even some tutoring if you need it? It’s just a thought.”

Thomas’s eyes widened slightly. He looked from Mary to the money in his hand, then back to her kind face. “My grandmother is home,” he said, his voice filled with a quiet awe. “She’s in the kitchen.”

Mary smiled, a deep, genuine smile. “Wonderful. Perhaps providence has indeed arranged this meeting.” As Thomas went to fetch his grandmother, he clutched the money, but his mind was already on the possibility of books and learning. He realised his grandmother’s words weren’t just about getting something back directly, but about opening the door for unexpected blessings. Sometimes, he thought, providence comes knocking in the form of a grateful person at your door.
