The Secret Under the Dress

I NOTICED SOMETHING ODD ABOUT THE BRIDE AT MY BEST FRIEND’S WEDDING – WHEN I LIFTED HER DRESS, EVERYONE WAS LEFT IN SHOCK
I was a lifelong friend of the groom, and I was truly delighted to witness his happiness at last. His bride proceeded down the aisle, and the scene was like a dream: the breathtaking white gown, the extended train, the blossoms… Yet, something seemed amiss. Her gait appeared peculiar. It was almost as if her movements were restricted.
I observed intently as the bride neared the altar. Her steps were clumsy, almost wavering. Everyone present was engrossed in the celebratory ambiance, but I couldn’t dismiss the nagging suspicion that something was amiss.
As she approached closer, one of the guests quipped about the bride appearing to “glide” down the aisle. People giggled quietly, but I found no humor in it. Something was gnawing at my insides. And at the precise instant the bride was almost at the altar, I advanced.
My heart stopped. I couldn’t disregard my instincts any further. Therefore, precisely when everyone anticipated her standing beside the groom, I swiftly moved forward and carefully raised the edge of her gown.
The church became hushed, and everyone petrified. What I witnessed defied reason.Beneath the layers of delicate fabric, instead of ankles and feet, were…roller skates. Not elegant, shimmering skates that might complement the gown, but battered, well-worn roller skates with scuffed toe stops and faded colors. A collective gasp rippled through the church. The silence was broken only by the faint whirring of the wheels as she teetered slightly.

The bride’s face flushed crimson. “I… I can explain,” she stammered, her voice barely a whisper.

The groom, bewildered, stepped forward. “Explain? What’s going on?”

The bride took a deep breath. “I have… a condition. A rare one. My legs…they seize up. It’s unpredictable. Walking for extended periods, especially with the added weight of the dress…it’s almost impossible. I didn’t want to ruin the day, so I…” she trailed off, shamefaced.

A wave of murmurs swept through the crowd, quickly evolving from shock to understanding. Several older women in the congregation nodded sympathetically.

The groom’s expression softened. He took her hand. “Why didn’t you tell me? We could have figured something out together.”

Tears welled in the bride’s eyes. “I was afraid. Afraid you wouldn’t understand. Afraid you’d think I was…weird.”

He squeezed her hand reassuringly. “Weird? I love you. Roller skates and all.” He turned to the guests, a genuine smile spreading across his face. “Turns out, I’m marrying a pretty cool roller derby girl. Anyone got a spare pair of skates?”

A ripple of laughter broke the tension. A young boy in the audience eagerly offered his own brightly colored pair. The bride, with a shaky smile, accepted. The groom helped her adjust the skates, and as they stood together, hand in hand, the church erupted in applause.

The wedding ceremony proceeded, perhaps not in the way anyone had initially envisioned, but filled with an unexpected wave of acceptance and love. The bride “glided” through her vows, and the first dance was a surprisingly graceful, if slightly wobbly, spin around the aisle. It was a wedding that no one would ever forget, a testament to the power of honesty, understanding, and the enduring magic of love in the face of the unexpected.
