A Note, A Lunch, and a Forever Family

A LUNCH, A NOTE, AND A LIFE-CHANGING DECISION 💝💝💝
Yesterday, I unpacked my work lunch to discover a container of homemade muffins nestled inside, accompanied by a note from our 10-year-old foster son, Alex. A couple of backwards letters, but it filled me with warmth.

We embarked on the journey of foster parenting after many years of hoping for children, desiring to provide a nurturing home for a child in need. Alex, with his gentle nature and enthusiasm for building things with Lego, has been part of our family for nearly a year now.

That simple note illuminated a profound truth—he’s not merely our foster son. He’s our son. Today, my husband and I resolved to adopt him. He is still unaware… but we are organizing a special reveal! ❤️The rest of the day at work felt like it flew by in a happy blur. My heart was brimming with anticipation, and I couldn’t wait to share our decision with my husband. As soon as I got home, I found him already beaming, holding the very same note from Alex. “You read it too?” I asked, a smile spreading across my face. He nodded, his eyes glistening. “It was the muffins, the note, everything… it just clicked, didn’t it?”

We spent the evening in hushed, excited whispers, planning the perfect way to tell Alex. We wanted it to be special, memorable, a celebration of the love that had already blossomed in our home. We decided on a family dinner that weekend. We’d cook his favorite meal – spaghetti and meatballs – and bake a cake, his absolute weakness. We even bought a small, framed photo of the three of us from our recent trip to the park, a tangible symbol of our family.

Saturday arrived, filled with a nervous energy. We decorated the dining room with balloons and streamers, trying to keep our excitement contained. When Alex came downstairs, his eyes widened at the decorations. “What’s all this for?” he asked, a hint of curiosity in his voice.

“It’s a celebration, buddy,” my husband said, winking at me. “A celebration of our family.”

Dinner was filled with laughter and happy chatter. Alex, oblivious to the momentous news about to break, regaled us with stories from school and his latest Lego creation. After dinner, as we brought out the cake, adorned with candles, my husband cleared his throat, taking Alex’s small hand in his.

“Alex,” he began, his voice thick with emotion, “remember how we talked about fostering, and how we wanted to be a family for you?”

Alex nodded, his eyes now fixed on my husband with a serious expression.

“Well,” I chimed in, kneeling down to be at his eye level, “we’ve been thinking a lot. And we realized something very important.” I paused, taking a deep breath, my heart pounding in my chest. “Alex, we don’t just want to be your foster parents anymore. We want to be your parents. Forever.”

A moment of stunned silence hung in the air. Alex’s eyes widened, and he looked from me to my husband, a question forming in his young face. Then, slowly, a shy smile began to spread across his lips. “Really?” he whispered, his voice barely audible.

“Really,” my husband confirmed, his voice choked with emotion. “We are going to adopt you, Alex. If you want us to be your parents forever, we want to be yours.”

Tears welled up in Alex’s eyes, but they were tears of pure joy. He launched himself into our arms, hugging us both tightly. “Yes!” he cried, his voice muffled against my shoulder. “Yes, I want that so much!”

The cake, the decorations, the carefully chosen words – they all faded into the background as we held our son, our *son*, for the first time in a new, deeper way. The warmth in the note from yesterday paled in comparison to the overwhelming love that filled our home that night. It was more than just a life-changing decision; it was the beginning of our forever, a family built on muffins, notes, and a love that was finally, officially, ours. ❤️
