A Vegas Wedding, a Smaller Guest List, and a Lost Invitation

Story image

WHEN MY KINSMAN WAS PREPARING TO TIE THE KNOT, THEY DISPATCHED A “SAVE THE DATE” CARD IN ADVANCE OF THE FORMAL INVITATIONS. AS THE WEDDING DAY NEARED, I SENT HER A MESSAGE, SIMPLY INQUIRING ABOUT THE ARRIVAL OF THE INVITATIONS SO I COULD CONFIRM MY ATTENDANCE. TRUTHFULLY, I WAS CONCERNED THAT MINE HAD GONE ASTRAY IN THE POSTAL SYSTEM OR SOMETHING OF THAT NATURE. IT WAS AT THAT POINT THAT SHE INFORMED ME OF THEIR DECISION TO HAVE AN INTIMATE VEGAS WEDDING, RESTRICTING THE GUEST LIST TO A MERE 10 INDIVIDUALS DUE TO FINANCIAL CONSTRAINTS. ABSOLUTELY NO CRITICISM FROM ME, AS I UNDERSTAND THE SITUATION. HOWEVER, THE SUBSEQUENT WEEK, I RECEIVED ANOTHER COMMUNICATION FROM THEM. UPON OPENING IT, I WAS TAKEN ABACK. IT WAS AN OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT.Upon opening it, I was taken aback. It was an official announcement, yes, but not of the wedding itself. Instead, nestled within elegant script and soft floral borders, was an invitation. An invitation to a post-wedding celebration, to be held a month after their Vegas nuptials, back in our hometown. It explained that while they had chosen a small, intimate ceremony for their wedding day, they still deeply desired to celebrate their marriage with all their loved ones. The announcement served as a heartfelt invitation to join them for a relaxed evening of food, music, and joy as they officially began their married life. A wave of warmth washed over me. It was clear they hadn’t forgotten about me at all. In fact, by sending both a “save the date” and then this lovely post-wedding celebration invitation, they had found a way to include me and everyone else they cherished, while still honoring their initial vision of a small wedding. I immediately RSVP’d with enthusiastic acceptance, feeling genuinely happy for them and grateful to be included in their extended celebration. It was a perfect, thoughtful solution, and any lingering disappointment I might have felt vanished completely.
