The Unlikely Equestrian Excursion

THE LONE RANGER AND TONTO HAVE JUST SPENT A MONTH RIDING. They finally stopped. The Lone Ranger groaned, “My everything aches.” Tonto nodded, “Mine too. Next time, let’s walk.” Suddenly, their horses stood up on their front legs and started walking on their hands, muttering, “Finally, some relief!”The Lone Ranger and Tonto stared, mouths agape. The horses, Silver and Scout, ambled around on their front legs, their hind legs kicking gently in the air. Silver, the Lone Ranger’s magnificent white steed, muttered, “Much better circulation, you know.” Scout, Tonto’s paint horse, added, “Less pressure on the hooves. Try it sometime, fellas.”
The Lone Ranger chuckled, “Well, I’ll be…” Tonto, ever observant, examined the horses’ legs. “Look, Ranger, their front hooves are like hands! Almost like they were always meant to do this.”
Silver, overhearing, stopped his hand-walk and looked at Tonto. “Precisely! Evolution, my dear Tonto. Delayed, but here nonetheless.” Scout snorted in agreement. “Now, if you’ll excuse us, we’re going to explore that stream over there. Hand-walking through water is supposed to be excellent for the… uh… wrists.”
The horses ambled off towards a nearby stream, their hind legs bobbing rhythmically. The Lone Ranger and Tonto watched in stunned silence as Silver and Scout splashed in the shallows, occasionally using their hind legs to propel themselves forward, looking for all the world like oversized, furry children playing in a puddle. They even attempted to catch fish with their ‘hands’, though with little success and much splashing.
After a while, the horses returned, dripping and refreshed. Silver shook his mane, sending droplets flying. “Right then, that was invigorating. Ready to carry you two again… but maybe just for a little while today?”
The Lone Ranger and Tonto exchanged glances, a silent agreement passing between them. “Sounds fair to us,” said the Lone Ranger, a smile playing on his lips. “And Tonto and I will walk beside you for a bit.” Tonto nodded. “Yes, good for our… uh… feet.”
And so, the unlikely quartet set off again, the Lone Ranger and Tonto walking alongside their hand-walking horses. They journeyed at a slower pace, enjoying the scenery and the unusual sight of their steeds navigating the terrain in their unique fashion. They learned that day that even the most dependable partners need a change of pace, and sometimes, the most unexpected solutions are the best ones. From then on, their rides were a little different. They incorporated ‘hand-walking breaks’ for the horses, and the Lone Ranger and Tonto found they enjoyed the slower pace and the shared laughter at the horses’ comical, upright gait. They even started practicing walking on their own hands, though they quickly realized it was much harder than it looked, and perhaps best left to the equine experts. Their adventures continued, filled with the usual dangers and triumphs, but now with a new, slightly absurd, and definitely more comfortable dimension.
