Of course, the Coast Guard and local volunteers were still actively searching. And against all odds, late that afternoon, a Coast Guard helicopter spotted a faint signal flare from a small, uninhabited island a few miles offshore. They found her, dehydrated and shaken, but alive. Turns out, the kayak had capsized, and she’d managed to swim to the island. The currents had carried her further than anyone expected. The relief was overwhelming. He rushed to the hospital, and when he saw her, safe and sound, the rental kayak and the insurance claim were the furthest things from his mind.
