When Simone Serfontein discovered a baby squirrel hanging from a branch, she couldn’t help but save the helpless animal. The mother squirrel was nowhere to be found when she first started looking for her.
About five days old, still pinkish, hairless, and cold, the defenseless creature was wailing either for her mother or for food. Since the young squirrel couldn’t survive in the wild on her own, Simone made the decision to care for her. Dingetjie was the baby’s name. But raising the wild child was not all that simple.
Nursing her for the first four weeks was particularly difficult because she required feedings every hour, even at night. Due to her constant desire for warmth and attention, Simone was forced to accompany her new companion to work as well.
Dingetjie wasn’t at ease being separated from her devoted owner. Simone had to wrap her in nice blankets and place her in a little shoebox to keep her warm. The good woman understood that she would have to release the cute squirrel back into the woods once she had grown up.
Simone eventually realized that her acquaintance was pregnant. Dingetjie constructed a nest made of toilet paper inside one of her owner’s drawers Unfortunately, Dingetjie’s 2 pregnancies proved challenging. After several months, Mistie, the mother squirrel’s third child, was born.
These two adorable squirrels continue to bring joy and happiness into Simone’s life.
