Netflix Viewers Flag Troubling Detail in Pastor’s Sermons as New Case Update Emerges

Netflix audiences have been disturbed by parts of the sermons delivered by a South Carolina pastor whose wife’s death is examined in a new true-crime documentary.

Death of the Pastor’s Wife arrived on Netflix on Wednesday, August 26, and follows the last months of Mica Miller’s life along with the unanswered questions surrounding her death.

Mica, who was raised in the church, was 30 years old when she was discovered dead at Lumber River State Park in North Carolina on April 27, 2024. Authorities ruled her death a suicide.

However, the circumstances have continued drawing scrutiny, especially after evidence surfaced about allegations Mica had made against her husband, John-Paul Miller.

Miller served as pastor of Solid Rock Church in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The couple had also married there.

One element that viewers have found especially troubling is the way Miller discussed marriage and sex in his sermons. The documentary says he taught that wives owed their husbands “sexual obligations.”

During one sermon, he reportedly warned the congregation that if a wife did not satisfy her husband’s sexual needs, Satan would present him with 20 other choices.

That message triggered a flood of online responses, with many viewers asking why congregants continued listening to those sermons.

As reported by Tyla, one X user said it was astonishing that so many people faithfully returned each week to hear JP preach what the viewer described as complete garbage, adding the hashtags for Death of the Pastor’s Wife and Netflix.

Another person said they had started the documentary and could not understand why anyone remained seated through such strange, expletive-filled sermons. A third viewer described the series as genuinely difficult to watch and said hearing the sermons was painful.

Someone else called the sermons an unmistakable red flag and said they would have left immediately after hearing the claim that a husband would quickly find another woman if his needs were not being fulfilled.

What happened to Mica Miller?

The three-episode Netflix documentary traces the period before Mica’s death using footage that had not previously been shown, as well as testimony from her friends and family.

Those close to her say her marriage had become increasingly controlling and allege that her religious faith was turned against her. Evidence revealed after her death showed that Mica had accused Miller of abusing her.

Mica eventually sought a divorce. Two days after Miller received the divorce papers, she was found dead.

Not long before her death, Mica called 911 and said she planned to end her life. In the recording, she said she was going to kill herself and wanted her family to be the ones who found her, the outlet reported.

John-Paul Miller faces federal charges

Authorities continued investigating Miller after Mica died. He was later arrested over allegations that he cyberstalked her and gave false information to investigators.

In December 2025, a federal grand jury charged him with two offenses, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office: making false statements to federal investigators and cyberstalking.

The indictment claims Miller repeatedly sent unwanted, harassing messages to his estranged wife up until her death. Prosecutors allege that he posted a nude photograph of her online without permission, arranged for tracking devices to be installed on her vehicle, and contacted her more than 50 times during a single day on one occasion.

It also alleges that Miller interfered with Mica’s finances and damaged the tires on her vehicle.

If convicted, Miller could receive up to five years in prison on the cyberstalking count and as many as two years for making false statements. He may also be fined up to $250,000.

Miller is currently free on a $100,000 bond, and his federal trial is set for October 2026. He has entered not-guilty pleas to the federal charges. He has not been charged in relation to Mica’s death, which remains officially classified as a suicide.
