South African teenager Beandri Booysen dies after living with progeria
Beandri Booysen’s story embodied strength, affection, and an extraordinary commitment to staying positive. Even while confronting an exceptionally rare and devastating disease, she shared a happiness that reached thousands. Tragically, her journey ended only days before Christmas. Beandri was 19 when she died, yet her life will keep inspiring everyone who learns about it.
Born in South Africa, Beandri received her diagnosis at only seven months old. She had Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome, an extremely uncommon genetic disorder that makes the body grow older eight times more quickly than usual.
Only 1 child in every 4 million is born with progeria, and fewer than 400 children and young adults around the globe are currently living with it. Physicians believed Beandri was unlikely to make it past the beginning of her teenage years. She was determined to prove otherwise.
She lived every possible moment.
From the time she learned to talk, Beandri would not allow the condition to become her identity. Although the illness took a visible physical toll and she weighed just 12 kilograms, or 26 pounds, her spirit seemed to have no boundaries. She went to school, hoped to work as a teacher, and pictured herself one day getting married and raising twins. Her goal was to experience life like every other teenager and value each moment she received.
Social media gave Beandri a place to speak directly to others. On TikTok, she shared encouraging videos along with honest scenes from her daily life, attracting almost 300,000 followers. Her guiding words urged people to be themselves, love themselves, and have faith in themselves. That message connected with audiences worldwide.
Her posts did more than document what she was experiencing. Beandri also taught people about progeria, helping build both understanding and compassion around the condition.
Then came a mother’s heartbreak.
Only weeks after Beandri marked her 19th birthday, a sudden medical emergency unfolded. Her mother, Bea, posted an urgent request for prayers on Wednesday, explaining that Beandri’s heart had stopped and medical staff were working to make it beat again.
On December 18, Bea announced that her daughter had died. Her words carried tremendous grief as well as pride. She remembered Beandri’s vibrant character and described her as South Africa’s last surviving person with progeria.
Bea wrote that her daughter had become both a voice and an emblem of awareness for progeria and other special needs. Through every challenge, she said, Beandri continued to fight.
As the news traveled, tributes rapidly appeared across TikTok. One person said goodbye to a beloved friend and wrote about how deeply Beandri would be missed. Many more offered sincere condolences and expressed their sorrow to her family and everyone who loved her.
Beandri left behind one enduring message.
Her time in this world was painfully brief, but she used it to show others what deserves their attention. Her example encouraged people to embrace life completely, love without restraint, and notice the beauty contained in each day.
The sound of her joyful laugh, her brave optimism, and her determination to support other people will remain unforgettable. Those qualities allowed her influence to extend far beyond the limits imposed by her illness.
Her family has requested privacy as they endure this deeply difficult period. Even so, one truth remains clear: the light Beandri brought into the world will continue through the many people whose lives she changed.
As we remember her, may her story remind us to treasure the time we are given and to approach every day with the same courage, joy, and open heart that Beandri displayed throughout her life.
