Acne, also called acne vulgaris, is a long-term skin condition that develops when dead skin cells and natural skin oils block hair follicles. Common signs include blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, oily skin, and possible scarring.
It mainly affects areas with a high number of oil glands, including the face, upper chest, and back. The visible effects can reduce confidence and self-esteem and may contribute to anxiety or, in extreme cases, depression.
Genetics account for susceptibility in about 80 percent of cases. The roles of diet and cigarette smoking remain unclear, while neither cleanliness nor sunlight exposure is associated with acne. In both sexes, hormones called androgens can increase sebum production and contribute to the condition. Excessive growth of Cutibacterium acnes, a bacterium normally present on the skin, is another common factor.
