I FOUND HER LOCKET UNDERNEATH HIS PILLOW THIS MORNING

My fingers trembled around the small, tarnished silver locket I’d just pulled from under his pillow. The cold metal pressed into my palm, and my breath hitched, a familiar knot tightening in my chest. He was still asleep beside me, his steady breathing a cruel rhythm against the silence.

I shook him awake, the locket clenched tight, and he blinked, confused, then his eyes landed on my hand. ‘What is that?’ he mumbled, his voice thick with sleep, but I saw the panic flash in his gaze. I shoved it at him, ‘Tell me who Sarah is!’

He recoiled, pulling the covers higher, his face draining of color under the harsh morning light. ‘It’s nothing, baby, just an old… a keepsake,’ he stammered, avoiding my eyes. My stomach churned, the sweet scent of his aftershave suddenly cloying, making me want to vomit.

‘A keepsake?’ I scoffed, my voice cracking, ‘It has a picture inside, a picture of YOU with a woman holding a baby!’ My head spun, the room tilting as the implications hit me with brutal force. He just stared at the wall, refusing to meet my gaze, his silence deafening.

Then his phone vibrated on the nightstand, and a text message preview flashed across the screen.

“You lying bastard,” I hissed, throwing the phone onto the bed. “Who is she? Is that your baby? How long has this been going on?”

He finally looked at me, his eyes filled with a mixture of fear and regret. “Please, just let me explain,” he pleaded, reaching for my hand.

I recoiled, slapping his hand away. “Explain? Explain how you’ve been living a double life? Explain how you could lie to me every single day?”

He closed his eyes, taking a deep breath. “It was a long time ago,” he began, his voice barely a whisper. “Before I met you. Sarah was… she was my college girlfriend. We were young, and we thought we were in love. Then she got pregnant.”

He paused, his face etched with pain. “We weren’t ready. Neither of us was. We gave the baby up for adoption. We thought it was the best thing for everyone involved.”

Tears streamed down my face, but I didn’t say a word, letting him continue.

“I kept the locket as a reminder. A reminder of my past, of the choices I made. I know it was wrong of me to hide it from you, but I was afraid. Afraid of how you would react.”

“And the text?” I asked, my voice trembling.

“Sarah reached out to me a few weeks ago,” he said. “She wanted to know if I ever thought about our child. I told her I did. That was it. I haven’t seen her, I haven’t spoken to her on the phone. I swear.”

I stared at him, searching his eyes for any sign of deception. Could I believe him? Was it possible to forgive this? The pain was still raw, the betrayal still stung, but I could see the genuine remorse in his face.

“I don’t know what to do,” I whispered, my voice breaking.

He reached for me again, this time I didn’t pull away. He took my hand, his fingers interlacing with mine. “I know I messed up,” he said, his voice thick with emotion. “I know I hurt you. But I love you. I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Please, give me a chance to earn back your trust. Let me show you how much you mean to me.”

I looked into his eyes, and for the first time since finding the locket, I saw hope. Maybe, just maybe, we could get through this. It wouldn’t be easy, but if we were both willing to fight for it, maybe our love could survive even this.

I took a deep breath. “Okay,” I said, my voice barely audible. “Okay, I’ll try. But you have to be honest with me. No more secrets.”

He squeezed my hand tight. “I promise,” he said. “No more secrets.”
