THE DOCTOR CALLED ME HIS NIECE IN FRONT OF MY REAL AUNT

The sterile scent of antiseptic clung to the air as the doctor approached our chairs, his smile too bright.

He said, “Evelyn, your niece, Rachel, is here for your pre-op appointment.” My aunt stiffened beside me, her knuckles white where she gripped the chair armrest. My heart hammered wildly against my ribs. I couldn’t breathe.

She turned to me, her eyes narrowed into angry slits. “What did you tell him, Rachel? You know perfectly well who I am.” Her voice was a low, dangerous hiss, barely audible above the hospital’s constant, low hum. The tension felt suffocating.

I just met her gaze, letting the accusation hang heavy between us. The doctor cleared his throat awkwardly, adjusting his glasses, a bead of sweat on his brow under the harsh fluorescent lights. This was it, the moment of truth.

Just as she opened her mouth again, a jarring, insistent buzz vibrated from deep within her coat. Her old flip phone, of course. She yanked it out quickly, eyes wide, staring at the small, flickering screen, her face freezing.

Her face drained of color as she whispered, “No, it can’t be him. Not now.”

👇 Full story continued in the comments…She fumbled with the phone, her fingers trembling as she answered. “Yes… yes, this is she… I… I’m at the hospital…” Her voice cracked, and she looked as though she might faint. The doctor, sensing the shift in the atmosphere, took a step back, a polite question forming on his lips. I remained silent, watching the drama unfold, the weight of the doctor’s words still pressing down on me.

Suddenly, she hung up, her entire body trembling. She looked up at me, her usual steeliness gone, replaced by a raw vulnerability. “He knows,” she whispered, her voice barely a breath. “He knows I’m here.”

Before I could ask who ‘he’ was, the doctor spoke, concern etched on his face. “Mrs. Harding, are you alright? Can I help you?”

She shook her head, then turned to me, her eyes searching mine. “Rachel, there are things you don’t know… things I’ve kept from you, for your own good. That man on the phone… he’s dangerous. You need to leave. Now.”

Panic welled up inside me. Leave? Where? And why would she suddenly tell me this now? The pre-op appointment, the strange comment, the accusation… it all swirled in my head.

As if reading my thoughts, she grabbed my arm, her grip surprisingly strong. “Go,” she urged, her voice gaining urgency. “There’s a safe house… in the mountains. Take the key from my purse. The address is…” She stopped abruptly, her gaze darting around the room, fear clouding her features.

Suddenly, the double doors at the end of the hallway burst open. Two men in dark suits strode towards us, their faces grim. One of them held a gun, its metallic glint catching the harsh overhead lights.

My aunt gasped, pulling me behind her protectively. “Get away from her!” she yelled, her voice regaining its strength, but her face now a mask of fear.

I looked at the men, then back at my aunt, the doctor watching on in bewildered shock. There was no choice. I remembered her instructions, her urgent plea. I shoved my hand into her purse, found the key and the crumpled piece of paper with an address. I didn’t understand any of this, but I knew, with a sudden, chilling certainty, that I was in the middle of something much bigger than myself.

Turning, I ran. I didn’t look back. The sterile hospital air felt heavy as the men started their pursuit. The last thing I saw before I fled, etched in my mind, was my aunt, Evelyn, my protector and the woman who had just called me her niece, standing her ground. I promised myself, I would discover the truth. I owed her that much.
