My Best Friend’s Voicemail: A Heartbreaking Secret and a Shattered Trust

**MY BEST FRIEND’S VOICEMAIL REVEALED A SECRET I WASN’T READY TO HEAR**

I was cleaning out my voicemails when I stumbled on one from her, dated two weeks ago. Her voice was shaky, like she’d been crying. “I need to tell you something about Jake,” she said. My stomach dropped. Jake, my boyfriend of three years, had been acting distant lately, but I chalked it up to work stress. I played the message again, my hands trembling. “He’s been lying to you. About everything.”

I called her immediately, my heart pounding. She picked up on the first ring. “I didn’t want to tell you like this,” she said, her voice breaking. “But he’s been seeing someone else. For months.” I felt like the room was spinning. “Who?” I managed to ask. There was a long pause. “Me,” she whispered.

I dropped the phone, my mind racing. The man I loved and the woman I trusted most had been betraying me behind my back. I grabbed my keys, my hands shaking so badly I could barely grip the steering wheel. I needed answers.

When I pulled up to his apartment, I saw her car parked outside.

*Full story continued in the comments…*I stormed up the steps, rage fueling each step. The door was slightly ajar. I pushed it open and saw them. Jake was sitting on the couch, his arm around Sarah, her head resting on his shoulder. They looked up, startled. The look on their faces was a mix of guilt and fear.

“Get out,” I spat, my voice raw.

Jake stood up, but Sarah remained seated, tears streaming down her face. “Please, let me explain,” Jake pleaded, his voice cracking.

“Explain?” I scoffed. “There’s nothing to explain. You were together. In my own apartment.”

“It’s not what you think,” Sarah whimpered, finally lifting her head. “We didn’t mean for this to happen.”

I turned my gaze back to Jake. “You knew I loved you. How could you?”

He looked down, shame etched on his features. “I… I don’t know. I messed up. Terribly.”

I felt a wave of nausea wash over me. “I’m done,” I said, my voice surprisingly steady. “We’re done.” I turned to leave, the betrayal a heavy weight on my shoulders.

As I reached the door, Sarah called out, “Wait!”

I turned back, my heart heavy.

“He’s been miserable,” she said, her voice filled with a strange mix of sorrow and sincerity. “He’s been trying to break up with you, but he didn’t know how. He didn’t want to hurt you.”

I stared at her, then at Jake, who just looked at the floor. Suddenly, clarity came crashing over me. Their affair didn’t lessen my pain. It was not my fault.
I wanted to scream. I didn’t.

I went.

I walked away from his apartment, leaving behind a life and a love I thought was real. I knew the pain would linger, but the sting of the betrayal would fade over time. I would move on, and hopefully, find someone worthy of my love. As I walked away, I knew the next chapter of my life would be difficult, but it would also be mine, and that was a start.
