Julia Roberts took on a deliberately unglamorous look while filming Barbara Weston, a woman caught inside a troubled family whose differences come to the surface after their alcoholic patriarch disappears.
For the scene, her long brunette hair was left without the polished styling usually associated with her public image. Dressed in jeans and layered tops, she appeared far more worn down than glamorous, matching the serious mood of the moment being filmed.
The sequence showed Barbara walking with Ewan McGregor’s character, Bill Fordham, toward a boat dock. Ewan held Julia’s hand as the two approached with visible tension, preparing to identify a body in the presence of a sheriff.
When the body was revealed, Barbara broke down. Julia played the moment with intense distress, crying as Bill tried to comfort her. She remained in his arms as the grief of the discovery overtook the character.
Although the scene itself was heavy and emotional, the atmosphere between takes was very different. Not long after performing the breakdown, Julia was seen laughing with the group, showing how quickly the cast moved from the pain of the scene back into lighter moments during production.
Julianne Nicholson was also present and appeared to point out something amusing to the others. Like Julia, she was styled plainly for the film, wearing a blue shirt and brown flared trousers, with her hair pulled back into a ponytail.
The 2013 film also featured Benedict Cumberbatch as Little Charles Aiken, along with Meryl Streep as Violet Weston. Casting notes connected to the motion picture state that Renée Zellweger and Andrea Riseborough were considered for a role. Riseborough was initially cast but later left because of scheduling conflicts, and Juliette Lewis stepped in as Karen Weston. Chloë Moretz auditioned for Jean Fordham, but the role ultimately went to Abigail Breslin.
The dock scene captured one of the story’s darkest family moments, while the smiles between takes showed the contrast between the drama being performed and the camaraderie of the cast making it.
