The Grandmother’s Hidden Blessing
I decided to flip my mattress that afternoon to air it out and change the sheets. Everything was going according to plan until I noticed a cluster of tiny black grains tucked into the corner of the bed frame. They were matte with a very slight sheen, almost like miniature pieces of coal.
My stomach dropped immediately. My first thought was that I had discovered insect eggs, perhaps from cockroaches or beetles. A chill ran down my spine at the sight of them, and for a moment, I was genuinely frightened. I grabbed a piece of paper and carefully scooped up a few of the grains to inspect them more closely. To my surprise, they were hard and dry, clearly not biological or alive. Still, I was left wondering how they had gotten there in the first place.
Driven by a mix of curiosity and lingering anxiety, I took a photograph of the pile and sent it to a friend who is well-versed in herbal remedies and traditional folk customs. She messaged me back almost immediately, identifying the grains as kalonji, or black cumin seeds. She noted that black cumin is often placed in hidden spots intentionally.
Shocked by the revelation, I turned to the internet to research the significance of the seeds. I discovered that for centuries, kalonji has been used in various cultures as a protective charm. People often tuck these seeds under mattresses, hide them near thresholds, or sew them into pillows to ward off illness and negative energy while inviting peace into a home.
My initial fear quickly turned into confusion. I wondered who would have placed them there without my knowledge. Then, I remembered that my grandmother had visited a few weeks prior. She has always been a woman who values quiet blessings and traditional, old-world rituals.
That evening, I gave her a call. When I asked her directly if she had hidden something under my mattress, she simply chuckled. She confirmed that she had indeed placed the kalonji there, explaining that she had noticed me feeling restless lately and wanted to offer a little extra protection and peace of mind.
