The Remarkable Survival and Recovery of Nina the Rescue Dog

In late November, a dog named Nina arrived at the Wright Way Rescue in North Memphis under truly distressing circumstances. Confiscated from a cruelty case, she reached the shelter in a condition that broke the hearts of everyone who saw her. Nina was burdened by a massive thirteen-pound tumor attached to her abdomen, accompanied by two additional smaller tumors along her left mammary chain. Beyond the tumors, her physical state was dire; she was severely underweight, running a persistent fever, and suffering from an agonizing skin infection that plagued her tail and hindquarters.

The veterinary team at the rescue faced a race against time. The physical toll of the thirteen-pound mass was immense, and the risk of it rupturing grew with each passing day. However, surgery was not a simple immediate fix. The medical staff had to prioritize thorough testing and careful pre-surgical preparation. It was essential to ensure that Nina was strong enough to withstand anesthesia, as the procedure carried a high risk of significant blood loss and a greater-than-average chance of fatality. The team dedicated themselves to improving her nutrition and stabilizing her overall health before attempting the life-saving operation.

Their patience and meticulous care eventually paid off. On December 8th, Nina was finally ready for her critical surgery. The procedure was a success, and in the days that followed, she began her journey toward healing. She was placed with one of the rescue’s exceptional medical foster families, where she finally experienced the peace and comfort of a supportive home environment.

Following the operation, laboratory results from the tumor biopsies provided more answers. While the two smaller masses were determined to be benign, the massive tumor was identified as a soft tissue sarcoma. Despite this diagnosis, the outlook for Nina remains incredibly encouraging. All current signs indicate that she is firmly on track for a complete and healthy recovery. As she continues to gain strength and confidence, the team at Wright Way Rescue is optimistic about the future. Nina is currently surrounded by affection and professional care, making great strides every day as she waits to be matched with a permanent, loving family who will cherish her for years to come. After enduring such a painful past, this resilient dog is finally embracing a bright and hopeful future.
