Gito was discovered in 2015, left all alone in a small cardboard box under the punishing heat of the sun. Once at the facility, vets began the long process of treating his skin infection, providing the nutrition he had been denied, and showering him with the care that had been absent since he was taken from his mother.

Gito is currently participating in a rehabilitation program designed to prepare young, orphaned orangutans for a return to their natural habitat. In the wild, orangutans typically spend their first six to seven years learning essential survival skills like climbing and foraging from their mothers. Since Gito missed those critical early years, he now spends his days in a wooded area with other orphaned peers, developing the social and physical skills he will need for the future.
While the destruction of rainforests for industries like palm oil production continues to threaten his kind, advocates remain hopeful. The team caring for him believes that in a few more years, Gito will be ready to return to the wild. Until that time, he remains in a safe environment, surrounded by caretakers who have dedicated themselves to his recovery.
