The Remarkable Recovery of Eve the Bear

When you think of a bear, your mind likely conjures an image of a massive, majestic beast covered in thick, luxurious fur. It is a symbol of strength and wild beauty. However, the story of a young black bear named Eve serves as a heartbreaking reminder of how fragile these animals can be when they are stripped of their dignity and health.

When Eve was first discovered in Placer County, California, on Christmas Eve in 2017, she was barely recognizable as a bear at all. She was completely hairless, her skin was pink and riddled with painful scabs, and she appeared smaller than she should have been due to severe malnutrition that had stunted her growth. Rescuers were initially uncertain of what species they were even looking at. She was in a state of extreme distress, suffering from a severe case of mange caused by parasites that had been feeding on her skin.

Named Eve because of the day she was found, the cub was taken into the care of The Fund for Animals Wildlife Center. The staff immediately set to work to save her, providing extensive treatments to kill the lice and soothe her irritated skin. Regular, specialized baths were introduced to help her coat grow back. The early months were a rollercoaster of hope and concern. By April, while there was some patchy fur regrowth, the staff remained worried about the stubborn crustiness on her spine. Despite the physical challenges, her personality began to emerge. Caretakers noted how much she enjoyed her pools, splashing and playing with a youthful energy that signaled she was finally beginning to trust those surrounding her.

As the months passed, the mange eventually retreated, though Eve continued to battle lingering skin infections that required constant medical attention. The team at the center held onto the hope that she might eventually be returned to the wild. However, as winter approached, reality set in. Due to her compromised coat and the devastation caused by the fierce California wildfires, the experts concluded that it would be unsafe for her to fend for herself in the wilderness.

While this meant Eve could not return to the woods, it opened a new door for her future. The team decided she would be given a permanent, safe, and loving environment at their sister facility, the Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch in Texas. Preparing for this move required substantial funding, as the costs of caring for a bear are immense, reaching hundreds of dollars every week. Through the kindness of donors who were moved by her resilience, the necessary funds were secured to build a state-of-the-art habitat where she could thrive for the rest of her life.

Today, Eve is a remarkably different animal. While she may never have the thick, uniform coat of her wild counterparts, she is healthy, well-fed, and secure. She has gained weight, her skin is healing, and she spends her days enjoying her outdoor yard with the curiosity and spirit of a bear who has truly beaten the odds. Her transformation from a hairless, frail creature into a thriving resident of her forever home is nothing short of a miracle. Eve serves as a powerful testament to the impact that compassion and dedicated care can have on an animal who was once given almost no chance of survival.
