A Rescued Dog’s Journey to Healing and Trust

When Barbara Zuluaga first viewed the image of a small, rough-looking puppy online, she struggled to identify the breed. As a board member of the Houston-based A Chance to Bloom Dog Rescue, Zuluaga sees many animals in need, but she initially mistook this particular puppy for a Chihuahua or a similar small breed. The truth, discovered only after the dog was pulled from the BARC Animal Shelter in April, was much more difficult to confront. The puppy, then named Ziva, was actually an eight-month-old Staffordshire terrier mix. Despite her age, she weighed a mere twelve pounds, a direct result of severe malnutrition.

Ziva had been found chained to a tree in Houston, a situation that left her physically and mentally devastated. Beyond the malnutrition, she was suffering from advanced mange, her body was covered in painful sores, and her footpads were raw from constant contact with the hard ground. Zuluaga noted that this level of neglect does not happen overnight, pointing to a prolonged period of intense suffering. Because of this trauma, Ziva arrived at the shelter terrified, trembling at the approach of humans and unable to make eye contact.

Driven by a need to save her, Zuluaga moved Ziva from the shelter to a veterinarian, where she met Stephanie Williams, a technician who formed an instant, life-changing bond with the dog. Williams felt a profound sadness for what Ziva had endured and offered to foster her. For the next two months, Williams became the cornerstone of Ziva’s recovery. She nurtured the puppy back to health, watching as her fur grew back and her weight climbed toward a healthy range. Williams taught Ziva the simple joys of being a pet, including how to eat from a bowl, how to sleep in a warm bed, and eventually, the confidence to jump onto the couch.

While many potential adopters expressed interest in the small, cute dog, Zuluaga remained cautious. She knew Ziva needed someone with the patience and experience to help her navigate the lingering shadows of her past anxiety. Finally, they found a perfect match in a woman named Cassie Rogers, who reached out after hearing Ziva’s story. Rogers had a background in rehabilitating dogs and possessed the specific understanding required to help the pup flourish.

Last weekend, Ziva officially made the move to her new home in Fort Worth, Texas, and began a new chapter as Roxy. Her transition has been nothing short of a miracle. Now safe and loved, Roxy has blossomed into an energetic and affectionate companion. Her owner reports that she sticks close to her side, having fully accepted Rogers as her devoted mother. Roxy currently spends her days playing with toys, relishing her meals, and enjoying the comfort of sleeping in a bed. She gives kisses freely, loves running with the larger dogs in the household, and delights in snuggling on the couch. After a life started in darkness, Roxy has finally bloomed, proving that with enough time, patience, and compassion, even the most broken spirits can recover.
