Stolen Secrets and a Shattered Birthday

I STOLE MY BEST FRIEND’S BOYFRIEND’S PHONE AT GABRIELLA’S 21ST BIRTHDAY PARTY
As I sprinted through the crowded room, Alex’s phone clutched in my sweaty palm, I could feel my heart racing. I dodged a group of laughing friends and made a beeline for the balcony, desperate to escape the chaos. But before I could reach the door, Alex caught up to me, his eyes blazing with anger. “Give me back my phone, Emily,” he growled, his voice low and menacing. I pushed him away, the cool night air on my skin a stark contrast to the burning sensation in my chest. The sound of shattering glass and the smell of spilled champagne filled the air as our argument escalated. “You’re going to regret this, Emily,” he spat, his words dripping with venom.
My fingers tightened around the phone, the screen still lit up with a text from Gabrilla – “Meet me at the old oak at midnight.”
Now I’m holding a secret that could destroy everything.
👇 Full story continued in the comments…I wrenched the balcony door open and slipped out into the cool night air, the sounds of the party muffling behind me. Alex was right on my heels, but I darted around a few potted plants and down a small set of stairs leading to the garden below, putting distance between us. He wouldn’t cause a scene out here, not with guests potentially looking down. I needed a moment, just a moment, to understand what I was seeing.
Huddling behind a large rose bush, trembling, I stared at the phone screen. “Meet me at the old oak at midnight.” Gabriella. Midnight. The old oak at the edge of her family’s property, the one we used to climb as kids. Why there? Why in secret? A knot of dread twisted in my stomach. Was Alex cheating on Gab? Was Gab planning to break up with him there? Was this… about me? Had they found out I knew something? My mind raced, inventing scenarios, each one worse than the last. Alex’s angry words echoed in my ears – “You’re going to regret this.”
I knew I shouldn’t have stolen his phone. It was a stupid, impulsive act born of nagging suspicion I couldn’t shake all evening – lingering glances, whispered conversations I wasn’t privy to. Now, I had proof of *something*, but no idea what. And Alex knew I had it.
Checking the time on the phone, I saw it was almost 11:30. The old oak was a ten-minute walk. I had to go. I had to know. If this was about Gab, my best friend, I deserved to know the truth before anyone else. Before it blew up in her face, or mine.
Leaving the relative safety of the garden, I crept around the side of the house, staying in the shadows. I saw Alex near the back door, looking frustrated, probably trying to figure out where I’d gone. I had the phone tucked into my jeans pocket now, the vibration against my hip feeling like a frantic heartbeat.
I slipped through a gap in the hedge and onto the quiet lane that bordered the property. The walk to the old oak felt surreal. The party noise faded behind me, replaced by the chirping of crickets and the rustling of leaves. Every shadow seemed to hide Alex, every distant sound made me jump.
Finally, I reached the familiar silhouette of the ancient tree against the moonlit sky. It was just shy of midnight. I scrambled into its wide, low branches, finding a hiding spot where I could see and hear without being seen.
Minutes crawled by. Then, two figures emerged from the darkness. Gabriella and Alex. They stopped beneath the tree, their faces illuminated by the soft glow of Alex’s phone as he checked the time.
“Thanks for doing this, Alex,” Gab said, her voice low. “I know it’s last minute, and weird.”
“Anything for you, Gab,” Alex replied, his tone soft, completely different from the anger he’d shown me just minutes ago. My heart clenched. Was he really cheating?
“Okay,” Gab took a deep breath. “So, the surprise trip to Paris… for Emily’s graduation? It’s all booked. Flights, Airbnb, the Seine river cruise you suggested. Everything.”
My breath hitched. Paris? For *me*?
“Great!” Alex sounded relieved. “Just making sure we were on the same page before we told her. She’s been so stressed lately, I think she really needs this.”
“Me too,” Gab agreed. “I just hope she likes it. And that she doesn’t suspect anything. She’s been acting a little… off tonight.”
My face burned. The “secret” that could destroy everything wasn’t a betrayal. It was a gift. A massive, thoughtful, incredibly generous gift from my best friend and her boyfriend. And I had just potentially ruined it by stealing his phone, getting caught, and now eavesdropping on their final secret arrangements.
Just then, a twig snapped below me. Alex and Gab froze.
“Did you hear that?” Alex whispered.
“Probably just an animal,” Gab said nervously.
My heart hammered against my ribs. I couldn’t stay hidden. Not after hearing that. Not after realizing what I’d done.
Slowly, I lowered myself from the branch, landing softly on the grass below.
Their heads whipped towards me. Their eyes widened in shock.
“Emily?” Gab whispered, her voice full of confusion and hurt.
Alex’s face hardened, the anger from earlier returning, mixed with astonishment. “What the hell are you doing here?”
Silence hung heavy in the air, broken only by the sounds of the distant party. I stood there, Alex’s phone still in my pocket, the weight of my mistake crushing me. The beautiful surprise they had planned was laid bare, exposed and awkward, all because of my paranoia and completely wrong assumptions. I had stolen from Alex, lied to him, fled, and then invaded their private moment. There was no easy way out of this. The secret was out, but the only thing truly destroyed was the trust between us.
