I found the necklace under the passenger seat last night, the silver chain tangled with the clasp still open, like she’d ripped it off in a hurry. It was hers—I knew the tiny heart pendant engraved with her initials from years ago. She never took it off, not even when she slept. My fingers trembled as I held it, remembering the last time I saw her, two weeks ago, when she’d asked for a ride to some “emergency” she wouldn’t explain.
“What do you mean she’s missing?” I’d asked her boyfriend, Sam, when he called me yesterday. His voice cracked as he told me she hadn’t come home after work, and no one had seen her since.
I stared at the necklace now, the cold metal biting into my palm, wondering why she’d leave it behind. My stomach churned as I started piecing together the details—the way she’d glanced over her shoulder during the ride, the way she’d whispered, “I shouldn’t have told him,” before jumping out of the car.
Then, as if on cue, my phone dinged. An unknown number flashed on the screen with a single message: “You shouldn’t have found that.”
My breath hitched as I heard the sound of footsteps crunching gravel outside. The porch light flicked off.
*Full story continued in the comments…*My heart hammered against my ribs. I dropped the necklace, metal clattering on the floorboards. Who knew I had it? Who knew Alyssa was in my car that day? The silence outside was deafening now, broken only by the frantic pounding in my ears. I backed away from the window, fumbling for my phone, but my hand was shaking too much. A shadow fell across the porch just outside the door. Then, a slow, deliberate knock. *Thump… thump… thump.* It wasn’t Sam. This was something cold, deliberate. They weren’t looking for Alyssa anymore. They were here because of her, and they knew I knew something. The doorknob slowly began to turn.
