Since no one was singing the national anthem, he removed his helmet and picked up the guitar.
Jackson When Dean Nicholson realized nobody was available to sing the national anthem before his high school football game, he found himself in a precarious situation. Although a video could have been played for spectators and athletes, the high school senior wasn’t confident that it would do the song credit. So this ambitious athlete/singer provided fans a cover of his own song instead!
Thousands of people praised this talented teen’s performance in the viral video that followed his performance. Nicholson’s acoustic rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner rightfully stunned fans — in the stadium and around the country — with its inventive country flavor. Not only was it very gutsy to play in front of so many people.
The unexpected performer told The Baltimore Sun, “It was extremely cool. Most of the folks in those stands were people I knew, he estimated, and they were unaware of what he was doing until he pulled out his guitar. The virtual world was instantly enflamed by Nicholson’s patriotic act, which trended on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and other social media and drew many comments. Even Fox News aired the teen’s performance.
Nicholson’s performance was somewhat unplanned, but despite this, the high school senior puts just as much effort into his singing, playing, and songwriting as he does at team practices. His YouTube page, which is full of works from as far back as his freshman year, contains other examples of his musical ability. One composition, “Man Upstairs,” even had a music video developed for it. Nicholson’s aspirations in music even surpass those in athletics. He declares, “This is my final year, then I’m finished.” “Until January, I have. I’ll be through with my coursework and simply need to enroll for this semester. My principal granted me a waiver, and she is very supportive of what I do.
